Finding Decent Wholesalers

Hello
I've een looking into starting up a small retail business. I'm thinking of starting out at a local market and maybe also an ebay shop. The trouble is I cant find any decent wholesalers. I was hoping to sell sports wear and maybe some other clothing items but cant seem to find any suppliers other than end of line/returns. Am I likely to find anything online or is it a case of knowing the right person?

I'd be tempted to contact the manufacturers (such as Nike) and ask them who distributes their products.

I doubt you'll find too many people who will tell you the best distributors of Nike as you'll be in direct competition with them!

PS - most of the lists you *could* pay a fortune for online are not worth the money. I got my best suppliers by tonnes of hard work.

Not the right person but the right distributor and having the right structure yourself that they wish to deal with you. Some will not be interested in "little" accounts.

Go to any sports trade fair - until then look one up on line and have a look at all the details that they have about suppliers - you should be able to find one that way.

I would suggest that you start with end of lines anyway.

To start with I found that a lot of suppliers wouldn't deal with me because I am an internet shop with out a high street business but things have improved.

I go to the Harrogate trade fair and have found some great suppliers as a result. I'm sure that the sportswear industry must have similar events.

I'd recommend that you try to get as much as you can from one reliable supplier (it's trial and error for a while I'm afraid) so that you can hit the minimum order quotas when ever you need stock.

We supply market traders and ebay shop owners with martial arts clothing and equipment, printed and embroidered t shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, towels etc....anything that is on our website can be bought wholesale from us (the site is retail, but if you let me know what you are interested in I can get prices together for you.) as this is our core business.

Although we are not general sportswear stockists, there are many things that are generic - holdalls, t shirts, towels, general sports clothing, golf brands, rugby brands etc.

As mentioned above visit trade shows.

If you buy the product you require more often than not it will have some sort of branding that links it to the source. We brand all of our products with our logo and web address. Ring the source and see if they will supply you, if not ask them for their distributors list.

Are you wanting to sell other peoples products and make commision that way or fancy selling your own products? If its the later, I have a friend who sells her handmade buttons on www.etsy.com/ and it's a nice little earner as a hobby or I know a colleague who makes alot of commision selling his designs on a online shop that prints them on practically anything, baby grows through to mens t-shirts and he gets a good commision from that. There are plenty of affilate sites out there, some give higher commision than others and some are easier to sell depending on the product. Did you end up deciding on a product to sell or still searching?
