Already have a HMRC Government Gateway login, this is where I submit my Tax Return.

Recently registered for VAT, have my vat certificate, well my accountant as, but everytime I try enroling on the HMRC website for VAT online, I keep getting a bright red error message saying that I have already enrolled?????

When I check my list of items that I have enrolled for, it says that I'm not enrolled for VAT???

My first VAT return as to be in by tomorrow, I have tried ringing the VAT office ALL day, but the recorded message keeps telling me that they are extremely busy to take my call??? Anyone any ideas how I am going to get threw the HMRC Barrier??? Will I get fined for submitting late....

This is a real pain!!!

What advice has your Accountant given you on this? Aren't they submitting the VAT for you?

Don't panic.

If you are filing and paying online you have until 7th Oct to do it.

Even if you are late, you only get a 'rap on the knuckles' the first time. You will get a letter saying that they will surcharge you if you do it again within a year.

No, as I'm using Quickbooks pro, its easier to print off the vat, which is done automatically and file online... saves me £50 every 3 months for a simple operation as going online, unless of course, you have money to burn...

Still waiting for solutions please, to my question, Thankyou :-(

phone your accountant as they may have it set up to submit on your behalf.

I had this once then tried the system the next day and it was fine :)

I dont know the answer to your question but a quick thought have you been calling the VAT National Advice line or the online helpdesk. The National Advice line is just virtually impossible to use but you may want to try this number for the online helpdesk if you havent used it - 0845 010 8500.

Ring the HMRC help-desk, probably your accountant has registered on your behalf, so the company is already registered, but you are not. They should issue you a new/replacement user id and password to rectify it but it can take a while.....

Sorry to open up an old thread, but I just faced the exact same problem. Really wanted to get company admin out of the way this weekend so I can focus on client delivery next week; now I have to lose time calling the helpdesk.

Would be great to hear what the issue was in the OP's case (and others who also experienced this) and how it got resolved.

To answer my own question, it was timing issue.

I had overlooked this, but the letter with my VAT registration number clearly stated that I could enrol online any time from the following Monday, which indeed worked.
