Ecommerce Website Creation

Then you should really be talking about web agencies because it's extremely unusual for a single person, a freelance "web developer" as you're calling them to be very good at design, code, marketing, copywriting, and SEO.
Agency or not, have you never seen a c%a# website? I'll say it again, marketing is separate to a website build.

We can agree that code is not marketing. As I said, marketing is separate.

Page 2,3 & 4 of any Google search are full of sites built by developers who don't know the difference between a contextural button link and meta title. And wouldn't know search volume if it bit them on the ....

I'm talking about website developers, not developers who only write code.
I suspect we've scared @taxing away!

As @antropy & @fisicx say, that is almost always an agency description, I've been in the industry for a long time and met many great web developers, but very few had great knowledge, or even much interest, in SEO or copywriting.

Your comment about page 2, 3 etc of Google sums up what most people get when they work with a website developer, or do it themselves. On a project in a competitive industry, a website that gets no traffic.

Many customers know nothing about this, so never ask the company making the website to do any of this work. Business/website viability should be undertaken before you build a site, or create any sort of website project brief.

Even if you do it yourself, if you're up against competitors who have large marketing budgets, super optimised sites, loads of content, outreach and PR, you may be wasting your time and money just getting a site up and adding products.

The website is often the start of the marketing process, not the end for many projects, as lead generation marketing, PPC and websites are inextricably linked.

They are the same thing. A website is a marketing tool. The developer (using the standard definition) will create the code required to meet the marketing plan. This plan may include SEO research if required.

Totally agree with this, And it's a big part of the problem I have with website developers/builders/designers/creators offering to build a website that is 'SEO'd' and good to go but delivering rubbish.

Not the same but yes a marketing tool.

Marketing is the price you pay for having a s%*# product.
