Ebay Changes Come Into Effect Today!!!

Hello to all you keen ebayers,

as most of you proberly know ebay changes come into effect today upping the cost of all listing fees, shop fees and final value fees (FVF).

I have come accross many ebayers hoping and praying the new fees will still leave room for acceptable profits.

I would like to say good luck to all small sellers on ebay as the coming months will be tough but im sure the positive changes ebay have promised will equal out the price changes.

Personally I doubt that very much! What has already happened is that sellers are leaving in droves, including those powersellers that Ebay was really making those changes for.

To increase the prices and push subscriptions fees up for running an ebay shop to over double what they were £6 per month up to £14.99 will drive away the very small and unique businesses that made ebay a worthwhile place to shop.

Ebay can spin their price hikes in any way they choose to try and make it sound like they are improving things for the average seller but the truth is they are not, and I think it will prove quite a costly approach for them to take when their business and profits were already suffering a decline.

Those businesses that leave will prove fruitful fodder for the many ebayer-likes who charge nothing like the exhorbitant fees of ebay.

Ebay will suffer as a result of its continued choice to be greedy and ditch its original auction model.

If they genuinely wanted to improve things for sellers then they would have put in place a price structure which had the improvements without the unnecessary sting in the tail of increased subcriptions fees and an increase to 10% of the final value of items under £50.

The shareholders probably only care about short term gains to get their share price up to make a profit. Why should they care about the long term success of a site they are just using to profit from in the stock market?

Ebay has a history of making so called improvements that do nothing more than p*** people off. They still have lots of fresh meat to annoy though, so can keep on getting away with it for some time to come.

Unfortunately they are also screwing up more and more on the technical side, which is making even the buying experience a joke.

Personally I gave up selling large amounts on ebay a long time ago, once ebay fees and paypal fees were paid the sale was either a loss or the profit was no more than a few pence.

Still a good way of moving that hard to sell item but for what I sell, but I can see the change in pricing putting a lot of bulk sellers off.

We canceled our eBay store months ago. The fees were hardly justifiable then but after the recent changes it would have been a simple no go. When we did sell through shop inventory it was for advertising so depending what products you sell breaking even could still be a good thing (if you can manage that!)

Are other auction sites getting busier now then...? Would be interesting to know.

Interesting one. We do 2% of bugger all through ebay and we still managed to get a call from an ebay representative. They are obviously quite concerned about the whole change.

i want ebay to go bankrupt and out of business they used to be a haven to buy,sell and a fun place to hang out. Now i just see ebay as another big company out to get everything.

No the buy it now still has a period of time dependent on when the seller has chosen to list it until, its the removal of auction listings and the replacement of a fixed buy it now price that was the primary change.

I doubt ebay will go bankrupt anytime soon, but they have shot themselves in the foot with the new changes.

im sure on the ebay changes page it says Shop Inventory will be removed and fixed price brought in and that time will no longer be the dominent feature of page rank. this will be calculated upon dsr, P+P charges, amount sold and a few other ebay did not want to disclose.

But the seller can choose how long they display it for, so it will still have an end time, as a seller you dont want your item on there ad infinitem unless you are continually selling them, you want the item to end at some point thats often the key to getting the sale. You can still choose the setting to have it continue on forevermore if you want it.

eBay will be retiring the Shop Inventory format and replacing it with Buy It Now. We will also be extending the listing duration available with Buy It Now to 30 days or Good 'Til Cancelled.

Note the words extending the duration available... ie it can now be done

Not sure what page rank has to do with anything? The ranking they are on about is what order your listing appears in, so a ranking in those terms.

Shop inventory is not removed per se either, you just choose what level of shop you are operating at, what it will presumably remove is anyones listings that dont meet the new criteria.

I think you are confusing several elements of the changes - not that ebay is particularly clear with how its explained it all either.

If you dont like ebay and dont have an ebay shop then its not going to affect you anyway though. If you have an ebay shop and are selling items less than £50 you're going to get stung big time unless your a powerseller...thats the nuts and bolts of it

Just to clarify, a key part of eBay's new fixed price (Buy it now) approach is their 'Best Match' tool. By default, when searching for an item, eBay will display results using the 'Best Match' setting (as opposed to the time ending soonest etc).

As mentioned earlier, 'Best Match' is calculated on a number of variables, but a key new one will be the popularity of that single listing. They're basically encouraging you to use multiple quantities in your fixed price listings, claiming that the more items you sell from a single (rather than multiple) listing, the higher you'll be ranked in the 'Best Match' (as long as your other variables, such as feedback, are good).

Personally I am undecided as to whether this will be a positive change. I guess the proof will be in the pudding.

Ebay and Paypal have turned into two greedy corporations. They don't care about their customers and all they think about is profit and profit only. I can't wait for another competitor to compete with them.

Wigix has already started competing with them in the United States. I am shutting my ebay shop and accounts down immediately. Paypal now has a new policy whereby they hold your funds for 21 days and expect you to ship out items to buyers before releasing your funds after 21 days. This is the height of greed. Both companies enjoy playing with people's money and livelihood.

Its been a while since we last posted on here but we feel we need to say something about this mess ebay as created. We are a powerseller both on the UK and also the US sites and have been for a long time. Everytime ebay implemented new changes we accepted them as we use ebay for drawing customers to our website. Both stores paid for they selfs we did make a profit be it a very small one but still a profit.

With the new changes we have worked the margins out and we can either increase the prices to cover the costs or pull out. Increasing the prices will make us less competitive so the likely hood is to bid ebay fair well.

As for finding an alternative to be honest we have looked at the other auction sites both here and the states and nothing we have seen will worry ebay.
www.ebid.co.uk works similar to ebay but does not look like it as much activity going on.

Amazon fantastic site but only good for books and music.
I could carry on but they is no point.

We will give ebay 1 month to see if the changes are geared towards power sellers if not it will be bye bye ebay.

The changes on the US sites are even more drastic so its not looking good for ebay at present. As the saying goes ( Do not bite the hand thats feeds you) If thats the case ebay is starting to chew at my elbows

the only problem with new auction sites is unless one takes the world like storm like ebay it will never be the same. but i do think it is time everyone closed there ebay accounts and moved else where

see if you cost get everyone in the world to leave ebay and move to ebid for example we would all be happier buyers get cheaper goods because of lower costs to sellers. seller get more profit and dont feel like there being scammed.

the thing that really annoys me and i mean i feel like writing a post shouting and swearing is that ebay are not poor or struggling to get by.

i give ebay 2 months and if no results im gone and will just work on my eshop

What I didn't expect was a drop in sales! I was going to give it a couple of months to see how it goes as far as the fees are concerned but I've hardly sold! I usually have 10 to 20 buyers a day, I had 3 yesterday and 1 today! I'm giving it one week and if it doesn't improve, I close my shop as my advertising money will be better spent elsewhere!

No site can grow organically and compete with eBay, ever.

Maybe you'd have a chance if you had millions and millions in marketing/advertising, and could accept losses for some years. Then come in with a huge bang, and get HUGE media attention all over the globe, then sure it may work.

But the fact of the matter is eBay has all the consumers, and for everyone that makes a loss someone makes a gain.

I hate eBay and PayPal, but these new changes are extremely good for me.

Why do they need to hike this up as much, its totally ****.

They make enough of FVF and BIN/Listing fees as it is.

Sellers are probably better off having their own e-shop which they try and rank high in the search engines. Advances in technology mean that it is possible to get a professional presence online (websites/e-shops) very cheaply now. Many businesses are successfully promoting their businesses for free using social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Do we really need Ebay now?

I used to buy off eBay alot but increasingly found Amazon Marketplace to be more attractive.

Just curous as to why is Amazon not an option for the disgruntled sellers?

Amazon is up and coming for many people, but non electrical and non book items are very much in their infancy on Amazon.

There are a lot more changes coming to ebay in the next 2-3 years, simple answer, either adapt or sell elsewhere.

I had two slowish days due to the huge volume of shop listings now coming into the core search results, and the quirks of the new search system. I've changed a few things and am back to approx where I was before the changes.

Things will settle down over the next 3-6 months, one thing that will not work guys is simply putting thousands of listings onto ebay, it's not required, time to use your brains a bit. Already many people who have the most expensive shops which allow 1p listings are changing their minds since they are not getting any results.

In summary:

Power seller selling 50-100 items per month using BIN format average price around £70...

- I welcome the fact you can list a million items for penny's now, but if your profit margin per sale is reduced to penny's also whats the point? Its twice the work for half the margin!

- It's always been a struggle competing directly with "bedroom traders" who pay no taxes or customs duties on import of the goods they sell on ebay, and now ebay have just thrown them an even bigger meal ticket with SEO style listings i.e cheaper listings go to page 1 etc...

What impecable timing too with most small businesses struggling in the economic climate... the first few days have seen a sharp fall in sales via ebay and no doubt this will set the pace for the coming months.

I had a call from ebay today. I had complained to them by email but their phone call was just to make sure I knew about the changes, AS IF!!!!

I told them I am quite happy to change my listings but if the sales are not following, there won't be much point having a shop.

The default search ''best match'' is actually ''dynamic''. Someone posted on the ebay forum and her items were found on different pages by different members who were trying to help her, everyone will see results differently.

The only advantage so far is that I will list less often, hence saving time.
