Does my business name give off a negative first impression?

Hi,

Just set up a website for my business, Two Thirds Media. It specialises in photography and video, and with photo/video you normally compose images/film with the "two thirds rule". Hence the name "Two Thirds Media".

I have however had a fair bit of criticism from people on a photography forum saying that the name "Two Thirds" will give people the impression they are not getting my whole effort ie, less than the whole, not quite there, something missing . . . etc etc.

Is this a realistic thing people would really think initially when coming across my business?

I originally really liked the name, but after people have said this I've always had slight doubts.

Would appreciate your thoughts.

Thanks,

Ben.

Don't think there's anything wrong with the name, I quite like it.
Is it a case of people being far too critical?

The only bit of the name I don't like is 'Media' its a bit boring and non specific in my opinion.

Not always the case, can you tell from ours? Creating a catchy name will work.....

Well at a guess seeing as you have the word "Moo" in your business name.

Could it be something to do with cows.? :|

Not sure I know any other animals that MOO.:D

Correct.....however you wouldn't assume we sell cows from our web name, would you?
Apologies to lolage for diverting off the original topic!

Oh right I suspect if you were to include what you do in your title or description people might realise you sell model cows, which would increase the likelyhood of people visiting your site who are interested in buying a ruddy cow.:p

P.S are they horse meat free.?

Completely disagree.... If we are talking about a web name, a catchy name and one that people will remember is just as effective. It doesn't have to be relevant.

Unfortunately with my non-media background I would not know what it was referring to, but also being very in -touch with my inner adolescent I happily read it as 'Two Turds' ...sorry, not helpful but it occurred to a couple of others I ran it past as well.

No, but you will put in search terms like 'cow parade', 'cow gifts', 'cow collectibles' ?
This could go on.....guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one!

Back to the original post.....

You have had feedback suggesting that you will only give 2 thirds effort... has anyone asked if you only charge 2 thirds of usual cost :-)

I think the name is ok

I can't find fault at all - although I doubt many would make the 2/3 connection. They could think (this isn't serious) that it means you 2/3" cameras?

The name is important if it gives people the wrong idea of what you do. Back in the early 90s, we specialised in radio microphones for theatre - so East Anglian Radio Services worked pretty well. The trouble was we got mistaken all the time for a radio station - I still get CVs and junk mail from ad agencies today - our accountant suggested using it as an acronym - so ears media worked much better, but 'ears' is a much dafter name than two thirds media! Go for it.

Hi Lolage,

Personally I think it all depends on the way you create your branding campaign and position yourself in the marketplace. Name shouldn't be a problem

Nothing wrong with the name, just another media company. What you can create or offer of tremendous value to your customers is what's important. I couldn't care less if you were called "we are useless media" if your work and offerings were outstanding. I'd just think you were being edgy. It honestly doesn't matter and you shouldn't really waste too much time on it, stick the word media or studios at the end of any company name and hey presto you're good to go. Forget the name and show what you can do better than all the rest and get some customers, that's where the focus should be. The names fine.

Well two thirds does suggest something less than the whole thing...
A name like 'The extra mile Media' would suggest that you would put in that bit of extra effort as compared to your competitors :)

In any case there is no point investing money in a name that you would always keep not feeling sure about, hence I would consider changing it...

Personally I'm not keen on the name, I would think of it as either being 3 star or only three parts of the job being done, but then I'm not in that industry, so may be different to those in the know.

I think the biggest problem will come when someone feels unhappy with the service, and they are likely to refer to you as being representative of your name and not giving a complete service but thats just my opinion. Too me, its a bit too risky.

camerashine
scenecaptured
perspective-enhanced
movieorstill
gold2thirds
goldenratioview

These are available. But it is often better to focus on your client's needs. What sort of pictures do you want to specialise in? Weddings? Portraits? Commercial? Wildlife?

Don't really want to specialise fully, but I have most experience shooting extreme sports and nightclub video! I could do real estate videos too. Bit varied really..

I would be thinking along the lines of
camershine

actionsnapped is also available.

Given your clients (sports and night club) I am even more of the opinion that 'two-thirds' will not mean anything to them other that its not the whole job.

There is of course no reason why you cannot have more than one trading name so use something quite different for real estate videos. Nor will these jobs give much scope for the 2/3rds anyway.

After recieving a lot of feedback regarding the "two thirds" being negative and "media" being too generic.

How do these sound?

www.xlode.com
www.klyzo.com
www.viidy.com

My only concern is that they don't really say what I do. Are any of the above better than www.twothirdsmedia.com?

They sound bad. Looks like a jumble of letters. I can't pronounce any of them, apart from the bottom one which sounds like a video sharing website.

Your website looks great. It doesn't look like two thirds of an effort or anything like that.

(Btw, you know when you do this photo, do you have to do it at night?)

Thanks, I am tempted to just stick with two thirds media. I'm spending far too much time stressing about finding a new name.

That picture was taken in daylight, but I used a ND filter (which blocks light to the lense) to enable me to have a longer shutter in daylight. :)

I just had a look at your site, and your photography looks first class.
I agree its not worth changing if you have got this far.

But I would not rule out trading under different names for different genres in the future as you develop more examples in each area. Prices would likely also be very different for a day's hike up a mountain to photograph than popping into a local nightclub.

I think the website looks really good and there is something quirky about the name but on the other hand, it also seems to ring out as saying 'two thirds media, one third (something else)'.

A number of people have said its not good and this would be enough to put me off as ultimately you don't want anyone being unsure about what your trying to say or portray.
