Does anyone have any tips for SEO

Hi,
I do some freelance web design using Joomla, I am currently outsourcing SEO when people want it but I am wanting to learn more of it myself, I know the basics: page titles, meta tags, keywords and so on but this is only the simple stuff and doesn’t do much in terms of SEO.

Whenever i speak to people about the subject they very rarely seem to give you any useful information.

Is one of the main factors link building?

Does anyone have any tips as most the information I can find online seems to be outdated, expensive or useless.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Jonny

That's because the people who do this for a living aren't going to give away all their secrets for free.

There is loads of really good SEO stuff available. The google guide is a good start, the SEOmoz beginners guide is OK and there is always the 'SEO for dummies' book or you could sign up with SEObook.

Once again I'll suggest The Art of SEO. £20 off Amazon (or less) and you'll be clued up. With SEO, getting the 'basics' right is often all you need to get a website working well in the search engines. Those basics being the use of the right keywords in the right page elements and credible links to show authority.

Nail that then start worrying about all the 'advanced' stuff.....

Web designers make there money selling websites.

SEO make lots of money for lots of people who might be a tad upset if they shared all there knowledge with all and saundry.:p

Many people can design a website but there are not so many who know how to make money out of it.;)

On RedEvo's recommendation, I read 'The Art Of SEO', a very good book, gives a lot of information in a very concise and clear manner.

Erm i think Earl meant that the websites dont return investment.

Many people can design a website but there are not so many who know how to make money out of it

Erik Wernquist was a man had an idea to combine a sound by Daniel Malmedahl with his animation he sold it for pitance to jamba who sat on it for a while and spent 1000 creating a really good website.
Did you know it made jack.

But when they offered it free on a tv campaign and charge you a club fee they made millions and that was in the first week.

Like earl said building a website is not the same as making a profitable website

you gotta love lings website...its a sin but one of those good sins like three ****** at the same time thing lol :D:D

Design is in the eye of the beholder.

Cash goes in your pocket.:|

I.E Lings site has been voted both the worst and the best site on the web a fairly wide margin of opinion..:)

If you absolutely MUST use Java script drop down menus, image maps or image links, be sure to put text links somewhere on the page for the spiders to follow.
Fresh content can help improve your rankings. Add new, useful content to your pages on a regular basis. Content freshness adds relevancy to your site in the eyes of the search engines.Make sure your site is easy to use. This can influence your link building ability and popularity and, thus, your ranking.
Use keywords and keyword phrases appropriately in text links, image ALT attributes and even your domain name.
