I’m looking at setting up an e-commerce set for ladies apparel

Can anyone help with any pros and cons on shopify platform to sell in the UK?

Appreciate it won’t be as good as a proper website design but budget is tight!

Alternatively any recommendations for other platforms like square or wix that would be a good e-commerce platform?

Avoid wix, it’s rubbish.

Shopify will do the job much like any other. The actual platform you use is the cheap part of the business. Marketing will cost far more. Especially so in an ultra competitive niche like woman's clothes.

As someone who uses Shopify for their own business but also setups Shopify for others and develops code on Shopify, it's a solid platform.

I would always recommend using a paid theme, start with the $29 account, most businesses can use this.

Costs are 2.2p + 20p for a transaction.

It's one of the better ecommerce platforms out there if done properly.

Without making assumptions, if you are doing POD (print on demand) do not believe all the hype videos that show it's easy.

It's not, as @fisicx says, marketing is hard and expensive. If you have a social following these are more powerful than anything else.

Everyone says Shopify is expensive, it's not in comparison to decent hosting + the conversion rates. It's a miss conception, their API allows a ton of access to multiple things

Two major limitations are discounts, you can only have one code used at a time and the final checkout process is locked. Which can be a pain but it has a high conversion rate.

Every migration I have made has converted better on Shopify (from opencart, Magento,WooCommerce)

Same as all platforms, not perfect but it's a solid platform for $29 a month.

The best thing I love about Shopfy is that they have great customer service, they always find a solution or points you to direction where you can get solution.

No experience of shopify, I set ours up using woocommerce.

All I would say is that, as others have mentioned, the platform is the least of your worries.

Our physical shop has done great, even though we only started four days before the 2020 March shutdown. Our online shop has been disappointing in volume terms.

I am a professional marketing person, but from the “good old days” , so now I have registered on an SEO course and increasing our online marketing spend and using paid social media platforms (£99 a month).

You really need to be different and find a niche, as you have little chance against the giant ladies fashion brands like Next etc.

Pros: simple to set up, lots of themes, low up-front cost, keeps things simple.
Cons: monthly and transaction costs can be high, you cannot customise certain things.

We use Shopify and are very happy with it. We have put lots of man hours in to set up a good store using one of their themes (warehouse). Currently $29 per month with over 700 products plus low fees and they pay out quickly too. Backup has been great when we have had issues.

I would however love an app that can tell me in greater detail who is browsing my store.
