I have a list of 976 local businesses which I would like to direct mail.

To break even, I need to acquire 1 actual paying customer out of the operation.

My initial aim is to get the recipient to call my 0800 number and book an appointment for a free health check - once I am there I can close on other items.

I was thinking of something like the following - any input from you guys welcome.

Where can i get this information from.

By writing a bot to do it. Although I think you'd be on dodgy legal grounds.

Seabro, as it's all local businesses you are targetting, you might want to make it very clear you are also local - either by inlcuding your geographic phone number or by some other means.

Yep, you would be on dodgy legal grounds. People like Yell and Thompson put in a fair few fake business addresses so that it can track down people who do just mass mail from their databases.

They are very aggressive in their pursuit as well. I would suggest going down the route of buying a one-off, or mutliple use mailing list.

ohhh only thought I'd ask as I think someone else on the forum said they'd done it but can't remember who...don't want anything dodgy.

EXCELLENT STUFF. I WOULD JUST CHANGE THE END A BIT. SOMETHING LIKE:
I will give you a call in a few days time to see if we can arrange a mutually convenient time for a Health Check for your company. However, please feel free in the meantime to contact me if you have any immediate questions.
I WOULD SEND OUT BETWEEN 10 & 20 SUCH LETTERS ON A MONDAY AND FOLLOW THEM UP THURSDAY MORNING. DIRECT MAIL THAT IS NOT FOLLOWED UP MORE OFTEN THAN NOT FAILS!

really sets the mood, might use it across the bridge here igf I get any spare time.

Otherwise are you interested in hitting the Bristol area, we have asizeable db of business customers in the SW (with some fakies in to catch you out he he he).

All the major directories are covered by copywright as the data is an asset they let you use rather than generate and give to the world free.

Bots can be written, but not to read yell, I have had great success using crawlers to trawl the whole web which is in the public domain.
