Different first name for different businesses?

Do you think it is odd if a person has different names depending on what business they are running?

Some years ago I knew a lady who had three different businesses, and for each one she had a different "first" name (her first name was for one business, and her two middle names for the other two businesses).

While I can see the advantage of this - depending which name someone calls her by she know which business they are interested in - I think it can lead to confusion in public space or event if the person is called one name by one person, then another comes up and calls her by a different name.

What do others think?

It makes me think of those dodgy businesses run by con men, where they just change the trading name and use a different first/surname to avoid being found out.

What she was doing sort of makes sense logically, but it might make me question the legitimacy of their business if I discovered it.

She didn't go out of her way to hide it, she just said if someone called her by a particular name she immediately knew which business they were interested in.

I can't say I have ever come across an individual who has used different names for different businesses. It does seem odd in the world of business to use different names and if I for example was running several businesses I would have no issue in letting everyone know the other ventures that I ran .... as others have said it does sound suspicious and if found out by an existing customer maybe an element of trust could be lost? I have always had a nickname which is only used by family and friends and never in business which is quite nice as it separates out my work/personal life. When I am a naughty girl though my husband does refer to me as Barbara!

I am sorry, but as soon as I read this I couldn't help think of the TV sitcom, Porridge, (with Ronnie Barker - not the rehash) when Fletch is talking about Pan's People (the seventies dance group, regularly on Top of the Pops and often - for the time- quite scantily clad).

Referring to the dancers, Fletch says, "There was one in particular, 'Beautiful Babs'. [LONG PAUSE] Can't remember her name."

I am very well, thank you, Barbara. It's been a tough couple of years, but am now getting more stable again.

I would find it very dodgy and would probably be reluctant to do any business with them. You think con (wo)man when someone is known by different names.

Maybe she is a frustrated actress and writer, with a real name, stage name and a pen name.
