Degree classification....Would you hire a 3rd class graduate?

First and foremost I find its getting the right person that fits - no point having a genius if you want to kill them at the end of one day in their company.

After that, if I wanted a graduate I would consider 3rd class degrees happily but would give a lot of weighting to where it came from. If its one of the more established old Polys or Unis then I'd generally give more weighting to a 3rd from there than a 2:1 from somewhere which was little more than a local playschool before it turned into a university.

I scraped a 2.1 (with much struggling) last year FYI in graphics/advertising :D
I'm also working (thanks to some sound CV advice from guys on here) and have not found my grade to be an issue at all.
My previous issues you may find by going through my old posts had been lack of experience.
If you'd like, I'll meet you in person to show you my certificate (and transcript, thats the important bit) ;) (and im not kidding)

My dear friend got his grade this year and has all but given up on life!
The guy in question studied forensics and thinks its his grade holding him back from getting interviews. He actually has more work-life experience than me. He only finished in May and already knew what grade he'd have, but he swears thats whats done it. Im just trying o help a friend whats wrong with that?

We can meet up if you want, although I'm dangerous around students for at least 3 reasons ;)

Nothing wrong in trying to help out your friend at all. Sometimes you have to accept the realities of the situation though. The reality being that after several people replying all have said that the degree is either irrelevant, or that if it is relevant, a 3rd is nowhere near good enough anyway. Clearly no one who specifically wants someone to work in the field of forensics is going to entertain a person that essentially failed the uni course. Not so long as there is at least one other applicant that has a 2:1 or a first etc. In the same way that I'm not a tall bloke, I can't reach the top shelfs in my own shop! It won't change, I'm stuck with that reality.

So better for him to broaden his horizons and figure out what he is well suited for as an alternative.

Also, I'm not trying to find out about specific jobs (not even i know exactly what jobs he's gone for), i just want to know employers general opinions on grades in general.

As I said, everyone seems to agree that a 3rd is either irrelevant or not good enough.
