Courses and Training Recommendations for entry into the business world!

Hi All

I am looking at buying a freehold pub in the south in the near future and I was just wondering what short business courses and training that you would recommend I take before taking the leap.

I have run a small business here in Australia before but I guess there would be many differences in terms of tax & VAT, employer/employee laws, OH&S (is it even called that in the UK?) etc.

I am not specifically looking for a licensed premises education course but rather a small business course that will give me a good idea. (1-2 weeks).

Perhaps there are a number of courses I should take......?

Any ideas on well known and trusted training schools in the Hampshire/W.Sussex area?

Hi Dean tell us a bit more about yourself ...So you are living in OZ at the moment and looking to come back to the uk?...Do you know the pub business has been going through a rough time over here.A lot of pubs are up for sale.

If you were going to Wales I know that there are free business courses available that was paid for by the welsh assembly

We are just about packed up and we will be leaving for the UK in about 4 weeks.

Yup I have been following very closely the plight of the British Pub and wont be touching a lease with a barge-pole.

We are in a fortunate enough position to be able to search for a Freehold pub.

My company has a comprehensive selection of free online training courses, many of which would be useful to you including Health and Safety at Work, Employment Law, and the Environment and Business, as well as the usual marketing, sales, management, etc courses.

My company has a comprehensive selection of free online training courses, many of which would be useful to you including Health and Safety at Work, Employment Law, and the Environment and Business, as well as the usual marketing, sales, management, etc courses.

I would probably like to do a course that is recognised once I arrive though.

You will ahve to do an NLC certificate to hold a license to sell alcohol, but I don't kow any provides.

You might want to look through the learn direct web site, they offer both free and paid courses although I have no idea if they are any good.

You might also need to do you food and hygience certificates.

HRMC run courses on VAT and PAYE, and I would recommend that you take these.
I would also recommend the FSB membership, because for about £150 a year you'll be able to access all sorts of documents and resources that will help you, partic if you've been out of the UK for a while. They have helplines etc that will let you just double check implication, get legal advice, and inparticular employment advice.

Sad though it is, employing someone in the UK is becoming a high risk exercise, employment legislation is vicious!

Some of my staff and I have taken several e-learning courses run by LearnDirect and they were very useful and comprehensive.

From memory they cost around £35 each
