Courier damaged goods - issue invoice w/out VAT?

I can't quite get my head around this one so any help would be grateful.
I bought a set of second hand doors from a seller on eBay and had the courier collect them, but in transit they were damaged.
The couriers have admitted liability and asked me to issue them an invoice less VAT.
The problem is, although I am VAT registered, the doors were not bought from a VAT registered business or seller so there wasn't any VAT paid on them, the only VAT paid was on the shipping cost to get them back to us.
Do I have to discount VAT from the value of the damaged doors or not?
Thanks

No, just issue the invoice for the net cost of the doors to you. I assume the courier company are only making sure you are refunded for they actually cost you (Cost less VAT (0))
