Confused! Web Terminology

Ive just logged in to my web control panel and there were the following options - can anyone translate please??! :?

SQL Databases
Raw Access Logs
PHP Mailing List
Apache Handlers
Fantastico

If you don't know what they even stand for, I'd recommend not trying to play with any of them.

- SQL Databases will be MySQL/SQL/SQLLite and so on databases for storing information. You will have a control panel where you can manipulate this date.
- Raw Access Logs. Apache logs for your website, where you can see their browser (user client) the page they visit, the time and what method they used to visit it (POST or GET, which will almost always be GET, unless it's a form and you specify otherwise)
- PHP Mailing List....for e-mailing people ;_
- Apache is the web server. This is where you can say that if the file has an extension of .php, then it will run as a PHP file.

Hi Sarah,

the raw web logs will give you some info.

If you want I can generate a full set of data from them dependent on the log format and mail back to you a whole report.

Sarah it sounds like you have cpanel installed.

There should be a couple of different stats options..
AWstats and Webalizer - look for the buttons

webalizer is a bit pants - it just gives me loads of IP addresses Im waiting for a google analytics account but as you can tell, Im not patient!!

Hi Sarah,

I run several stat analysis systems.

Weblog Expert is a good solution to have a nose at your logs.

As I said if you want me to run them through the app and generate a report let me know.

I think they still do a limited free version which may be of use.

I dont really understand all the terminology - I would just like to be able to see the actual companies who are viewing my website so i know what mailings are sucessful - can you help?

Hi Sarah,

It is very unlikely that you can get this info from your log files due to the mechanics of how the web works.

You should be able to guage traffic trends, but you may wish to change your urls ton certail mailings to track traffic.

eg

http://mo1.whatever.com

or

http://www.whatever.com/mo1/

or

http://www.whatever.com/?ref=mo1

The log files are very useful and can givbe you a lot of info, possibly not directly what you are looking for.

I do offer a log / traffic analysis service as part of the work I do for clients.

As I said before if you want me to generate a quick report just PM me and I will give you my email address to send the logs to ands I will send the report and a quick analysis back to you.

i think thats asking a bit much unless as mac has mentioned elsewhere that they have a specified ip address witha name tagged to it.
