Commercial/ Industrial gas safe engineers

Afternoon all

First post here, so please be gentle.

How's everyone find things at the mo?
I'm a commercial/ industrial gas safe engineer, on my second business (first domestic gas safe business was sold in 2020). Started my commercial gas safe business around 12-18 months ago & although I've had some success, it's only just enough to tick over.

I've got everything I thought I'd needed in place, but still can't seem to get the right doors to open for me, so to speak.

Would be really interested to see if we have any other sole-trader commercial gas safe engineers in here & what their thoughts are?

Thanks in advance people

Well I've just waited over a month to get a heating engineer in, however commercial is going to be a different kettle of fish altogether as many a company will have contracts in place with relevant maintenance companies so a little more difficult to get your foot in the door

Are they commercial heating engineers? Or domestic?
Most of my work within this new business has been servicing, breakdowns & the odd install. Servicing & breakdowns have always been more profitable I find
I don't know

I do know that one of them was assessing a contract opportunity to service hotels throughout the UK - Huge money, but turned to down as it would involve 24-hour call-outs, lots of travel & staying away. He mostly installs residential systems.

The other is more 'jobbing'.

From your perspective, the starting point is to decide exactly where/what you want to be.

Our boilers are being serviced at home right now and I asked then about commercial work.

He said it really difficult to find clients. Most businesses already have contracts for maintenance so all you really get is the one off jobs when the main contractor is booked up.

It took us an age to find someone to service and maintain our warehouse heating once our previous contractor closed his business.

Having eventually found someone to do this we do have to chase them every year.

Having heaters serviced is a H&S and insurance requirement so most will have this in place however delivering fliers in the immediate area around any work you do could bring rewards.
