Choosing a payroll service provider?

Hi all,

I need to find a payroll provider for handling the payroll of 1 employee in the UK. My search so far has left me a bit overwhelmed with the number of providers to choose from.

What I'm basically after is the market leader of low-price payroll providers - is there such a company? Or perhaps a few companies that stand out?


Any advice on finding a provider would be highly appreciated.

Will you be engaging an accountant in the UK? If so, they may well be your best bet as most firms include payroll as an adjunct to their other professional services

No, not at this stage. Just a payroll provider.

That's the first time I've ever seen the words Iris and free in the same sentence!!

Think there are some valid and some less valid comments here. Not sure its fair to bemoan Iris when they do provide free software. They make the profit from the premium rate support line for the free system.

I also agree with the accountant comment, but as you are solely looking at payroll I would imagine you are requesting an outsourcing company as opposed to software provider?

Exactly. I had my first ever call from Iris yesterday, it was an eye opener to say the least. I won't take this thread in the wrong direction but to see a 10 company payroll coming in at over £700 I think my comment was justified.

Which immediately brings up an intriguing conflict. It's hardly in their interest to make the system easy to use so that nobody telephones them.

I'm not for one minute suggesting that they do that of course.
