Chinese and Japanese text display

Could anyone advise on what add-ons or plugins we need to be able to read (though not necessarily understand) Chinese and Japanese characters on our browsers (IE, Chrome etc.) and in Microsoft Word 2000?

We're just getting neat little squares where the characters should be.

Many thanks - yes, we do use XP, and hadn't realised it was a feature of the operating system. Just have to find the original CDs now.....
