Hi, I want to order some goods in from China, but people have warned me to be careful

Which is the safest way of transferring money to the supplier without being conned? Someone mentioned paypal guarantees money safety?

Most of these guys in China want money gram, wire transfer and western union, but I just don't want to be fooled into handing over money and not receiving my goods

Any other advice to help spot a fake?

You must verify your supplier very carefully indeed. If its a significant amount of money, I would pay one of the many agents in China who will do an inspection and report on the company.

T/T or Western Union are the favoured payment methods for legitimate chinese companies. Its high risk but you can lower that risk by taking steps before dealing with them.

I have never been scammed or conned by a chinese supplier but it has happened once or twice from UK "companies".

i would really recommend working with a UK based company the specializes with these sort of things, i.e. sourcing from China.

Why don't you check "China Britain Business Council" website - they have got a directory there that can help you with locating a company like that.

i'm chinese, had a few years export experiences.
the best i'd suggest is L/C, for you and for chinese company, as they also needs security.

I think HarwareHeroes has the best advice.

Still, you can pay half now and half later. That is another commonly used method to minimize risk.

Also note what Rollingabbage said. The western media always goes on about how chinese suppliers can be dishonest (and they can like anyone else), but when you have been over here for a while you find plenty of local suppliers who have been ripped off, severely, by westerners.
