Check up a US company?

Is there any register available online in which I can find information about a specific US company (number of employees and turnover for example)? The reason why I ask is that I'm planning to do make an order from a United State based company (a incorporation if that's matter) but I am a bit worried about being swindled.

You need to know the state in which the company is registered. Then go to the 'Secretary of State' website for that state and click on Corporations.

Remember that most US laws are instituted at the state level, and the federal government is supposed to be comparatively minimal in its role. Company law is mostly defined at the state level. Many companies are 'Delaware corporations' because of the experienced track record of Delaware courts re corporate issues. If you don't know the state of incorporation of this company, try Delaware first.

The company is registered in California. I made a search on the Californias Secretary of State website and I found the company but there's no information regarding number of employees, turnover etc. only their adress, their 'Agent for Service of Process' and that the company is 'active'.

US companies are very private in giving out their information. You can get a credit check done and it should include information on employees and sales and payment history, there is never any guarantee that it will contain all the information you want.
