I understand I have self-interest in this area, but I also have some knowledge. I will say:

BE VERY CAREFUL WHAT CARS YOU BUY WITH YOUR/BORROWED MONEY

As many people are doing, best buy none at the moment.

Reasons? - Well, due to current market, many manufacturers are bleeding and are THROWING hidden subsidies to move cars. One example is Land Rover. 57% down on new sales comparing Aug 07 with Aug 08. Now throwing buckets of hidden money. Cars being built and stacking up in compounds. Dealers cannot afford to call down stock on these heavy cars, and are refusing trade ins in many cases. I have reduced monthly rentals on my Discoveries by £100 this week due to these subsidies.

Great in short term. Now, in a month or two, residuals start to fall. Massively. Even more massively than they have been affecting every Land Rover owner. Look at USA, this is following, here. This will have impact on whole market. Wholesale panic is taking place. Pity poor people who own Discos - SELL THEM NOW! Take your loss, now.

Great for me and renters, bad for dealers and owners. One customer yesterday in Leeds (office in that Angel's Wing opposite Guy Salmon Land Rover) worked out a £6500 cost saving renting at my prices, than doing it through the dealer.

Why? - Fixed dealer overheads and 57% downturn in sales forcing a massive recovery rate through car margin, or else bleeding cash. Imagine how energy heating/aircon and fuel prices have affected these massive glass palaces. Car dealerships are extremely expensive to run. Why are showroom ceilings 10m high? They do not stack the cars vertically, surely?

I predict lots of dealers going bust, soon. For instance, in August ( the year's quietest month), me myself I did more new cars than the whole of the Subaru dealer network, and I equalled the whole of the Lexus dealer network. Look at a Lexus dealer and ask how they can survive on those slim pickings divided by ALL the Lexus dealers. (and that includes Lexus self-reg cars and dealer demos)

Be cautious about lodging deposits or having business exposure to car dealers!!! September bad weather and financial gloom will mean administration for many car dealers, costs never stop.

Here are some stats showing blood on the showroom carpet in August:

New car sales August 2008 Compared to August 2007

Alfa down 32%
Aston down 67%
BMW down 39%
Cadillac down 89%
Chrysler down 66%
Citroen down 18%
Dodge down 41%
Honda down 31%
Jaguar down 41%
Jeep down 58%
Land Rover down 58%
Lexus down 59%
Mercedes down 35% ... need I go on?

(me? I'm up :) My model seems to work well in this climate.)

Either rent, or buy cheap secondhand and make do.

Ling, those stats you quote re. Scooby and Lexus make depressing reading for the dealers concerned - my god, its no wonder they are not your number one fans!!

Faith, Look at my website.

Print the personal price list in price order. Use minimum filters. Print on about 20 pages (sorry)

Work down and choose the first (cheapest) suitable car. There are some bargains around. Eg Citroen C Crosser (Mitsu Outlander clone) 2.2 diesel VTR Plus is just £200+VAT/mth for 10k/miles/year. You would not want to buy one of these cash, being a 4x4 type subject to massive falls. Remember includes full RFL for contract. You service and insure.

I did not intend this as a sales thread, more a warning about what is happening from an insider listening to the screams from dealers. It's like one of those whale-music CDs.

Matt, yes, they do not like the truth published. However, people should know this stuff.

I was chatting to a Jaguar main dealer yesterday about a second hand XKR that I was interested in as I wanted to know if it was under cover due to the torrential rain. He told me that all of the unsold stock was outside as the showrooms were crammed with sold cars awaiting delivery. When I laughed and told him that the motor trade was supposed to be having a bad time he told me that although it was tough selling cars at the moment they were still doing quite a lot of business. He also told me that their BMW branch was doing exceptionally well having sold 40 cars in the week and were having trouble getting stock to sell.

Ian J,

I will inforrm the SMMT and tell them to re-check their figures based on what the dealer says.

They would say that, wouldn't they :)

Massacre by Christmas.

Above: This is Pendragon (largest UK dealer group) share graph last 3-months.

(Above) This is their year. Motor trade is doing fine, as you can see.

Dealers lie, although no doubt individual ones like my Audi supplier (50 car orders in pipeline from me to him currently) are bucking the trend.

If car sales are down like they are, where is the cash coming from? Can anyone explain this to me?

Do not buy that XKR unless you want to blow a fortune. Keep the current car, it makes no difference to your quality of life really. :)

Cheap 7 seater.

VW Touran, Citroen C Crosser, both around £200+vat. Depends what you want.

Diesel Zafira = bad news on DPF filters, stay away from this car.

----

IanJ, OK, buy XKR, watch money disappear like magic. It's only money :)

----

Sir earl should do well. People hang on to older cars, and need parts.

----

Why Pendragon share graphs disappeared? They are public info. Full UK car stats and YTD sales figs here:

Courtesy of SMMT :) Look at absolute August sales. Eg... Chrysler have 74 retail dealers and registered 125 cars in total between them in August. That's just one and a half cars each. Until you realise they will almost have been obliged to register at least one demo car each under franchise terms, plus any cars for their bodyshops/service depts. Plus any cars Chrysler UK registered for their own/press use. Which adds up to total sales of ZERO. Desperate times for many makers.

Hi guys! Quick question: Is the motor vehicle a good career to take? I've applied for an Apprenticeship with most of them car companies, but just want some assurance. Like, are cars the foreseeable future, or will they eventually die out? I guess current sales will obviously be down 'cause of the recession... I know that Bentley made some of their employees redundant last week.

Jason, you can have all the guidance in the world but you need to get on and do it. Devote yourself so much to it that you do not have to post here. keep it up (do nothing else except sh1t) for 1 month.

Then, you will wonder why no one told you how easily you can have success.

No matter how busy one can be - it's always nice to help and encourage our young wannabe entrepreneurs.

Great attitude.

Yes, I know that, but I was merely asking if the motor industry is good career to take? Like are cars the foreseeable future?

Like, uuuuuh, like, might be.

On the other hand, they will probably disappear next year and we will all go back to horses.

I would learn blacksmith, there may be more future in it.
