I have to say i'm amazed by some of the responses on this forum, but reading this I can understand why so many companies think that direct marketing doesn't work or the people in these lists are fed up with being spammed.

The data that you use is probably the most important element of your direct marketing campaign. Everything else is based on the quality of your data so why scrimp on this as it can cost so much more in the long term.

I've always been a great beliver in segmenting your target market and delivering a targeted message that is relevant and of interest to the segment that you have chosen. Not sending a generic message to a whole market. It doesn't matter what medium you use to communicate the data has to be good.

As Mike W said bad data can cost so much more than the initial cost, you can be open to prosecution, damage your brand, waste valuable time and effort. I don't know anybody who has done well with bad data.

Thomson Local are the biggest single data source in the UK - Try not to think of the size of the book compared to Yellow Pages book! I am not saying Thomson Local are the best or recommending anyone here. ( I know where they stand ). All the supplier have different strengths and weaknesses.

I would strongly advise against buying data from a call centre or any company that uses their own call centre from my experience of editing and updating and amending records that the majority of other operators had already used. Their data comes from telesales and teleappointers and many of these people will not put the work in to correctly update records, many of them will and would only update an entry correctly in the event of a sale.
