Can I shoot my neighbour's cat??

Shoot the little gits, they KACK all over my garden, then invite the fox's to mark their territory cos the little git of a cat KACKED over my garden in the first place, which then leads to the fox's KACKING and PEEING everywhere not to mention the badger's who then......sorry I don't have badgers, I was getting carried away.

As you see there is lots of KACKING and PEEING going on and it's not very healthy for my kids to go out and play, let alone ruining my my prized herb patch (not that kind of herb, before any one asks!!).

SO SHOOT THE KACKING PEEING LITTLE GITS!!

Sorry to the cats lovers out there....but cats do need shooting !!!!!!!

How about an electric fence?

The cat would only get a shock if it tried to 'illegally' enter your garden, so it would be the cats own fault if it got fried, not yours :)

Sorry, but cats are real pests to those people who live near to them.

And a lot of people let their dogs lick their mouth... after it's licked its arse!

Who's the more disgusting creature - a dog or a dog-owner?...

This discussion leaves me cold. You cannot shoot the cat under any circumstances - deal with it (like an adult) or move.

Interesting remark :?

How should an 'adult' deal with this situation then?

Complain to the council?
Complain to the owner?
Write a letter to an MP?
Moan to the blokes in the pub?

or put the health and happiness of his family before everything else and quietly go out and strangle a pet worth about £5?

I don't want to be an adult if that means my family will suffer, I would rather be a man and deal with things once and for all.

You are quite happy to let me shoot a fox, or a rabbit, or a pigeon but are left cold at the thought of killing a cat?

If you are an animal lover then you should defend the rights of all animals. Just because it has a title of 'pet' doesn't mean it's life is worth more or less than a wild animal.

If you are talking from a legal viewpoint then emotion is a side issue.

At the end of the day, we are talking about an animal that damages my proprty and costs me money. If it was a fox or a rabbit it would already be dead, and legally so.

The fact that it wears a collar makes very little difference to me.

I have just missed my own problem cat recently - a 30-yard throw with an old shoe landed just inches away. "My" cat seems impervious to all threats, physical or chemical. I'll get it yet.

On the side issue, it is strange how some animals are seen as cute or likeable, while others are hated or feared for no apparent reason. I remember coming out of a restaurant with some girlfriends (i.e. friends who were girls) and the girls cooing at some squirrels on the ground about 20 yards away. As it was twilight, for a joke I said they were actually rats, not squirrels. The girls all screamed and ran off. Talk about mental conditioning.

But not to the law... Sorry.

I don't think that the legal viewpoint is going to make much difference to his opinion, or ultimately his chosen course of action.

Agri-Hire, do you have any pets?

If you do I'm sure you understand how much a part of the family they can become.

If you don't, well they do become part of the family.

So please do not harm the cat, or any other pet that inconveniences you, somebody loves it and will be devastated if you harm it.

There are other way of dealing with it, throw a bucket of cold water over it, it will not be back.

OK, OK, I won't shoot the thing!

But answer me this:

My family get upset with this cat causing chaos, yet you are telling me not to kill the cat as it may upset my neighbours!

Priorities Nigel, who is more important to me?

The cat can live (for now) but given the choice of upsetting a stranger over upsetting my loved ones I would not hesitate.

off to buy a load of buckets now!

No Joke.

Like I said, my families health and happiness come first in my book. Ahead of any neighbours feelings and certainly ahead of a cat!

Anyone who puts a cat in front of the health of his kids is the one who needs locking up! A man is supposed to protect and care for his family, not hide away because of people's opinions.

Worst case scenario - my other half gets pregnant, then goes out to do the gardening and comes across cat crap contaminated with Toxoplasmosis.

Toxoplasmosis is a disease that can be transmitted from cats to humans (although other infection routes such as undercooked meat are much more frequent). If a pregnant woman is infected with this parasite for the first time during a pregnancy the effect on the baby can be severe. Your wife should not handle the litterpan during the pregnancy and should wash her hands after handling your cat. Toxoplasmosis is much more likely to occur in outdoor cats as it is transmitted to the cat through hunting of small animals.

Like I said, I will not shoot this moggy and I will try other methods mentioned, but do you really expect me to think twice about killing a cat?

Think again!

In one word "Yeah?" You Really think your a man if you can't even find a way of keeping a CAT out of the garden? One word mate "B&Q".

Christ,If you really need to kill an animal for that reason you don't deserve kids, your not a man, more like a coward

Thanks for that link, Rob. Have you used this company?

I do not like cats in my garden but prefer this sort of means to deter them. I would NEVER even consider harming them.

I bet you would happily poison a rat or kill a mose though

Like I said, give an animal a collar and suddenly the animal rights people go crazy.

Actually, I have only ever used a humane trap and then released the mouse out in the countryside.

It's not a case of animal rights, the fact is (as mentioned previously) this is a domestic pet..i.e. someones PET cat. If someone shot my rabbit then I would be extremely hacked off. By the way

Protection of Animals Act 1911
This act applies to acts of cruelty to domestic or captive animals, so it can apply to wild animals if they are in a state of captivity. The penalty for conviction under this legislation is a fine up to £5,000 and/or six months imprisonment.

No never used then but often contemplated using a product like this.

My eldest plays in the garden alot and animal poo is one of my real 'pet' hates (excuse the pun)

Rob

Mine, too - my garden is currently overgrown and the cats use it as the local latrine. Next month we are having the garden stripped bare and will be starting from scratch to provide my three year old with somewhere to play. The products on that website look great and I will be taking a closer look to deter the cats from returning.

If you can catch it I can probably sell it, cats are in short supply at the moment, probably because people keep shooting them.

Then they can slowly starve to death as they are unable to survive without the food sources (human rubbish) they are accustomed too.........

It is totally normal for farmers to kill things, so try not to get upset with Agri-hire. The only difference now is, farmers have to do their own shooting, before the could afford to pay someone else to shoot things (vermin as the farmers see's them). :D

My Dads job when I was small, was shooting stuff on a farm. If things like rabbits etc aren't killed, they will eat everything and the farmer would loose everything. I am a big animal lover, but sometimes horrible things have to be done.

We once had rats outside in the bins at the bakery and was told we had to kill them. I didn't see it as a problem, as they were outside, but we called in pest control, we did as we were told. I watched the rat man shoot one with an air pistol, I felt so guilty. If you look at a rats face close up, they are so cute.

So who decides which animals should be pets, which are vermin and which do we eat? It's a very thought provoking question.

Yeah I agree with you on that Jayne, I know some animals have to killed to control their population etc... Trust me there are so many rabbit up here in the Highlands that its actually quite scary driving along the roads at night !! All you see are thousands of litttle eyes looking at you from the side of the road.

But there are other ways to deal with this problem without shooting it. If it was your dog that went onto someone elses property and it was shot. Would you still feel that its ok because its normal for farmers to kill things ?!

Anyway, the cat isnt going to get shot now and I hope it gets sorted out with a good soaking instead.

lol.. I wasn't meaning shoot the cat. I was trying to say, farmers shoot anything, they are brought up to harden their feeling like my Dad did.

My Dad could shoot anything, he had no feelings in that way. But I would cry buckets if I had to do it.

I love cats, my Mam has one and I had two when I was younger, until I found out I was allergic to them.

Water guns are the best thing to get rid of cats if you don't like them and doesn't harm them. I have read in gardening books, they don't like shale and pebbles either.

I put Agri-hire's question to my local cat and this was his reply. Sometimes actions speak louder than words

Well compared to what I heard on the news today, Agri's issue is pretty tame.

Some guy in America who was obsessed with his lawn being neat and tidy, shot a 15 year old dead for running across it!!!

Get a super soaker water pistol thing. Stake out your garden for a day. Leave out bait in the form of smelly cat food. Then everytime you see a hint of cat blast away at it with a full tankload. It won't come back after a day of this. Promise.

Thanks for that Jayne, I suppose my lack of emotion may trouble some people on here but you are quite right in sayng that Farming Folk are brought up in a different environment and become a bit detatched from the soft townies.

A cat has four legs and causes a nuisance, so does a fox, so does a rabbit, bla bla bla

I wouldn't hesitate or bat an eyelid

Sorry if that offends some people.

The difference is that this cat is a pet and whilst it will die quick, you will cause suffering to its owner. Perhaps a little old lady and its her only friend, or a young family just like yours.

Anyway I know your not going to shoot it as you're not that heartless a B*&%^$%^& (and you've already said so)

What amazes me with that argument is that killing any animal is fine, providing it doesn't cause any upset to a human being. I don't enjoy going past McDonalds thinking about the amount of cattle that were slaughetered in order to feed people, for a non necessity. Still, won't see any change take place there. I guess Agri should just go release his anger on destroying some dolphins, apes or whales, as they don't generally have owners.

You say that your family comes first, fair enough, so it should. But OH NO a cat has trodden on your garden and poo'd on your lawn? shock horror. sounds like you have a pretty boring life if you're worrying about things like that. you can't kill a cat, and if you do; you will be spending a lot more money on legal issues then fixing your garden. and before you say 'oh so just because its a pet you think its more terrible bla bla' im totally against killing ANY animal, whether its a pet or not.
So be a man about it
Grow up
Why didnt you talk to your neighbour before considering getting a gun out?
I know you're not doing it anymore. but it was idiotic to think about doing it to begin with.
Teach your kids the right way of dealing with problems, that don't end in shooting innocent things.
the cat doesnt know that its doing the wrong thing, just get an electric fence or something and everything will be OK.
oh as for the disease you can get from cats? it sounds like you're trying to think of ANY excuse to kill the darn thing. move away form the place if you have so much of a problem.
I know this was said a long time ago but i don't care i had to say something.
There are better ways of dealing with things.
