Yes. The sad thing is entrenched attitudes like this that put them off applying in the first place. Plenty from my state school class of '81 went to Oxbridge with no special connections, and did very well.
Now read the whole thing
"Do you think if Rishi was the son of a dustman from Dudley he could have got to Oxbridge and if he had he would have got into Lincoln, and if he had he would have been in with the right crowd etc etc"
I didn't say couldn't get there, i said get there, get into the right college for the right connections and be in the right crowd (like the Bullingdon),
It is an absolute fact that in all walks of life who you know makes a difference, certain things make you more likely to meet certain people that make certain paths easier to tread.
Actors children often make it in acting because they know the right people and have the right name
I am not saying it is "wrong" I am saying it would be stupid to pretend it is not the case - hence i stand by my earlier statement.
Rishi is not a self made man, Rishi's dad was, he took full advantage of what he and his wife could afford from their hard work and bought their son the opportunity to make the best he could of himself. Rishi obviously worked hard (you don't survive at Goldman Sachs otherwise no matter who your partner is) but he did not drag himself up from the gutter like some seem to profess
[i went to a school that was competitive entry with all fees means assisted so i was there for 7 yrs boarding for £0 - several of my class mates did very well. One the son of a plant nursery owner and electron microscopist (sp?) went to downing Cambridge and owns an equity release firm having been a top actuary, another who was from a single parent family ran the team that created the FT's current website, A guy the year above me has his name on a lot of the Sony patents relating to sound on the playstation range and now heads a team at MS - We all knew we were given a chance to step up from our parental background, some took it, i didnt manage to to the same extent]
