It happens every year on deadline day and every year people miss the deadline because of it. HMRC's response will be, as always, it's your responsibility to make sure you get the return in on time and they offer a number of ways to do that. If you leave it til the last minute and then the method you chose stops working, it's tough.
You have to wonder why we leave it so late? (mine was in at the beginning of the month, but even so, I wonder why I left it so late).

true....but if the trend is for the same increased capacity EVERY year why does it go down EVERY year....it's like complaining that amazon goes down every xmas....which it doesn't because they are professional and learn to cope with demand during high periods.

And HMRC have the cheek to call us their 'customers'. Oh boy, if we had a choice, they wouldn't need the extra capacity as we'd all go elsewhere!

I do mine by post (funny really, seeing as we develop online apps!), but that's always been the most comfortable route for me. Send it via special delivery, I know it gets there
Sent mine off mid Jan this year, which is late !
I was reading that for next year, paper filing has to be in by Sept or Oct, with only online filing to be done by Jan 31st... They want more people to do it online - yet they can't meet current demand!

Don't believe it a govenment computer system going down,hasn't been heard of for at least 30 minutes.
When are they going to stop giving contracts to there mates and get some professional companies in.

the problem usually is with the customer not the supplier....i've worked on a few and I can tell you they are absolutely frightening in their amateurism

I did mine Tuesday evening. I got to the submit page at about 10.30 PM and then.... nothing. It kept logging me out (but the info was saved). I kept logging in and trying to submit and eventually got submission confirmation at about 1.30 AM.

We have just received this statement from HMRC:
"HMRC's Self Assessment on-line filing service has experienced technical difficulties this morning which has meant that some tax payers have experienced difficulties filing on-line. The system is now rapidly returning to normal levels of service. A record number of 3.6 million taxpayers have already successfully filed on-line with 104,000 filing today.
HMRC takes any disruption of service very seriously and to reflect this no-one who files electronically or by paper by midnight Friday 1 February will face a penalty.
We very much regret any inconvenience this may have caused."

those figures are chicken feed for a modern computer 1.6 trillion calcs a second.
