o you have any qualifications / experience? If so, it's always worth writing to local firms of accountants who may either need some work done themselves or may know of firms that need assistance

degree in accountancy, and 18 months experience.

however circumstances dictate that i cant have a f/t job at the moment

Then I would certainly try accountancy firms because good bookkeepers are always at a premium

Send more than a few. It's a numbers game but once someone bites work should start to come in from referrals.

Yep.

Make sure you've got a good covering letter, without that they may not even get to the CV.

...... and forget the degree. What people are interested in is the actual experience you have. Manual, computerised, VAT returns, bank reconciliations, Trial balance, management accounts, purchase ledger, sales ledger, debt chasing etc etc

With bookkeeping, real life practical experience with references is worth more than a degree. People may think you're going to be too expensive if you have a degree

You could also try contacting local bookkeepers as they often contract out work to cover busy periods, holiday, maternity leave etc.

I know my post is well late, I have just join this forum, I agree entirely with you, you don't need a degree to be very experience in what you do, I have been a PA/Office Manager for odd 25 years, I hop for Accounting career, with a new company and my very kind boss Managing Director of his own firms that has been in business for odd 50 years, taught me all i need to know about Accounting, Book-Keeping, year End, Corporation Tax, etc, for a whole 13 months and that was 6 years ago, I can now actually deal with a small to medium size companies doing their account successfully.

A degree does not teach you the hard core of Accountant, book-keeping, as someone that has been in the business for years.
