hi all i would like to get into online selling. I run a satellite and aerial installation company in east anglia, which is doing ok. I think my business plan will work , which is selling from my exsisting suppliers stock. and once est buying direct. I have contacted magic solutions who are quoting £8000 +£500 per month upkeep and seo. I wanted my business to work so i have picked this company based on some of there past work. as they are working with some large names and are getting some decent results. i also wanted a local company so i can do face to face. my question, is this good value for money and what is the average price for a bespoke website and upkeep/seo. regards tony

Depends is the best answer - how many products do you think you will have on your site, if it say 20 - 40 then I would say it's on the high side, if you said 4000 - 5000 then I would say it's on the ok side.

As for ongoing cost's depends on keywords but would say if they do the design correctly they should really only have the link building element and tweaking which for £500 a month seems on the high side.

It completely depends on the size of your site, any special features, customizations etc you are after. We have done ecommerce sites on the low end of £1500 up and beyond of £10,000. Although we are not in Norfolk I would be more than happy to meet you if you wanted to discuss a brief of what you are after.

There is no "standard" price for websites as there is no such thing as a standard site. You can get someone to use an OS software, modify and existing template and have an ecommerce site up and running for under £500, likewise I have worked with clients spending £600,000+ on a bespoke site.

For running costs/ seo, you would really need to see a breakdown of what that is to be able to say if its value for money, if its 50 hours of content writing, link building, news article distribution etc etc then its good, if its $200 on hosting and 6 hours of SEO then its expensive.

ok thanks i can see now its hard to gauge. i kinda had this idea in my head that a cheap site would cost around 2000 and a top one around 6000. product wise i was looking at between 400 to 500 items. its at an early stage at the mo as they are researching my target keywords. to see if its viable for me. which is nice as they could of said yea yea it will work.

Ecommerce websites come in so many shapes and sizes it's hard to gauge an average. We've built and host ecommerce sites ranging from single product sites linked to PayPal, right through to huge Magento driven mega shops - where the web servers alone cost £500 month, and then some...

Regarding good value. Have you got a couple of other quotes to compare with?

Personally, I would ask myself what I'm getting for the £500 per month? Does this include web hosting, if so what sort? Shared, VPS, dedicated? And what will the £500 get SEO wise? Will they pay for GoogleAds? Facebook ads etc.

I would also make sure it is easy to move site should you decide to change supplier in the future.

It really depends on a lot of factors.

First question I'd ask is what platform are you going to use to build this store? Are you going to have a custom design made?

For example, most of the Magento design and development companies will tell you it's pretty much impossible to build a complete Magento powered online store under 25 000 USD. Some studios like classyllama.com will not even consider inquiries with budget under 70 000 USD.

Regarding SEO and upkeep, it really depends on what is included but anyway it goes 500 seems like a really small amount of money to pay for SEO and upkeep.

People tend to look at SEO and marketing as expense which is wrong. When building an online store, you should consider SEO and marketing as an investment and separate at least the same amount of money as you did for store's development if you wanna fight in the harsh competing world called the internet
