Hypocrisy and religion are familiar bedfellows, it's nice to see both rearing their ugly heads in unison again

It's odd that people often martyr themselves in the name of religion, these people are then revered by their felow faithful. Yet no religion will martry itself by accepting that the easiest way to help the world is to stop preaching altogether. Deliberatley allowing pain and discord to continue for no other reason than self preservation is selfish if you are a person, a faith or any other sort of group.

Religious people will spend a lifetime helping others to please the will of god, but they could never help as people enough to offset the number that inevitably die year on year because of religion.

Logic like that really doesn't suggest a business mindset to me.

Here is a great example of god squad at work, in business, trying to raise money.

They have bought the domain www.god.com

That alone must have cost a fortune, either that or the church was able to argue it sort of had to be reserved for them...

To pretty much anyone on here that domain would be a business in itself, however somehow they have ended up getting placed only no2 on google serp's for the search term 'god'. The website is appaling, incomplete and no SEO effort whatsoever. Shocking given that on the 'about us page' they quote the bible telling them to go fourth and convert people. You would think SEO would be a pretty useful tool these days to do just that.

This illustrates my concern about religion mixing with business. Religous focus seems to take focus away from being objective and effective in the modern world.

From my experience many decent, good people crumble or compromise under the pressure of life's dilemas. :(After all it would have meant Steve was less able to give to charity and less able to support others such as his family, maybe go into debt with his mortgage? There is also the argument that his loyalty should have been to the company and not his own self image. I have no doubt that under that sort of pressure I would definitely be needing to draw on God's strength.

If Steve says that it was faith which motivated him to behave like that who is anyone else to know better? :|It is to do with the motivation for doing right. That someone else might have done right for different motives is irrelevant. This is Steve's story.

It is only when I know I am forgiven and safe that I have the strength to do the right thing.

Without doubt there are others naturally better than me. But I find that since I have been released from guilt and since I have known the love of God I am a more honest person. Not because I have to be but because I enjoy growing into a 'chip of the old block' and discovering life in friendship with him. I am better this year than last, and better last year than I was the year before and so on. It feels great to know I am being re-created by him. Only he could do it.

Not PC but true.!:)

Methinks thou do protest to much.

Glad you found God cause it must of saved the taxpayer a fortune.:|

tbh, I have no problem with anyone having a 'christian attitude' with regards to their business, and I think if it promoted honesty and goodwill in the business arena, then it's all good.

I would take exception at a business which tried to shove god down my throat at every opportunity when we were only in contact with regards to a business deal of some sort.

I disagree strongly with the 'preaching' attitude, though I would defend anyone's right to believe in their religion and to practise it, even in their business model.

Not sure that was exactly what the original question asked :)

Oh, plenty of people know more accurately than I do what was going through my mind at the time. Haven't you learned that lesson yet? :)

I find words help to explain to other people what my point is, especially on a text forum :D

All I got was that you handed in a job out of personal decency. Couldn't link that to being a clear pro/con of being a Christian in business. I'm assuming of course that you don't simply think that Christianity and honesty are one and the same.

You should be glad that people are keen to hear the conclusion of the story, the moral of the tale as it were.

Born again would be capitalists make me smile; somehow they weedle their way around the eye of needle stuff and live with the conundrum of what their book says Christ said and how they actually live:

"Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me." Matthew 19.21

Can you explain to me how this goes against capitalism?

Voluntary charity- which I do a lot of (despite being broke and which Jesus requests)- and redistributive wealth issued by the government (socialised systems) are two different things.

I honestly thought you were smarter than that, CJD.

No one is stopping you from giving some of your money or time to the less fortunate people.

What has donating money got to do with being Christian? Perhaps if the Churches, gave some of their Wealth (large land owners etc etc) us other less mortals, might feel more inclined to follow their example.

Like I said before, you do not have to be religous, know the bible or work for yourself to be a kind, caring giving person.

Poppy

Are you aware that most charities are religious in nature- in particular Christian run?

Are you aware also that the religious also donate more money, donate more blood, and volunteer more than the non religious in the America? I'm willing to bet that a similar correlation can be found in the UK too.

If there is anything I loathe about the predominant white British population (as someone who was raised in 3 countries) is its wilful ignorance and repetition of canards- despite projecting accusations of stupidity upon other nations, with the classic example being Americans.

Without wanting to offend you, I find this thread-drift into born again revelations quite disturbing. Your new found emotional crutch is fascinating and worthy of debate on so many levels but surely should be left for a new thread about the relevance of religion in a modern society?

I find it staggering that any of you religious sorts can accept the rules of and operate within a capitalist society when by its very definition it creates poverty and hardship alongside the wealth and success.

How do you sleep at night when the success of your business forces a competitor to go under, perhaps causing the owner to lose their house, maybe even result in separation from their partner due to overwhelming stress caused by the business failure??

Hypocrisy and religion are familiar bedfellows, it's nice to see both rearing their ugly heads in unison again

More words from the uneducated (but thinks he appears to be intelligent) traders on UKBF. Surely you'd do well to stop spouting nonsense and tend to your business?

If you were half as intelligent as you probably give yourself credit, you'd realise that there are those who are possibly in the market for SEO browsing this forum, who may be or may not be religious- but despise the obnoxious.

People buy from people they like. Remember that.

Nice. Quikshop asks a pretty good question "how do you square capitalism with the dogma of religion?" and rather than engage you chip in with an ad hominem attack.

You call him uneducated, accuse him of spouting nonsense and being obnoxious and then say 'people buy from people they like'.

I think that's irony, sweet, sweet irony.

I only wish I'd seen this thread 10 pages ago.

Congratulations.

You’ve just lost a significant amount of business.

Before you open your uneducated poorly informed mouth, do you ever stop to:

1) Think about who your audience may consist of?

2) How the effect of your words- which drift into areas unrelated to business- can affect on future business?

Unluckily enough for you, I happened to stumble across numerous posts from you on some religious threads- when I happened to be searching for info from your posts about multiple extensions and different hosted line.

The company I work for part time, an IT training company in the wealthy EC2 area of London, are looking to have at least 3 lines put in due to the expansion of their internal telemarketing team.

My boss asked me to refer him a solution, and I managed to persuade him to go down the VOIP route with Voiphost instead of going with installations of more BT lines (which would cost him at least £300 for installation alone). After seeing your posts, I’ve emailed him and told him no way. Anyone who is as unprofessional as yourself is unworthy of his business.

I’ve referred him now to Voicenet solutions (the company I’m migrating to as you don’t support Cisco phones): http://www.voicenet-solutions.com/
Hopefully you’ll take from this loss of business that your representation of your business does not end during office hours (9-5) but whenever you represent your brand all times of day PUBLICLY.

Learn to separate business from politics and your personal prejudices (at least in public mediums)

PS- Once I’m out of voipfone credit, I’ll be saying “astalavista” too and closing my account. Offended me due to your beliefs? No. Offended me by your unprofessionalism? Yes.

You've been on this board for too long. Take some time out and get some humility.

i find it amusing that so many people slate those that profess to have religion... I am a christian and have a strong faith in God (sorry just too many quirks and amazing variety in nature for it just to be chance) so yes i have religion but guess what so do you agnostics and atheist's....

and a well known encyclopedia states in part about religion "religion, a system of thought, feeling, and action that is shared by others" so by that definition we all have religion

however many individuals of all backgrounds are currupt and bad and i wouldnt do buisness or socialise with them. yet there are people from all backgrounds that are wonderful people.

so yes buisness is what makes the world go round but so does thoughts and emotions so how we practice faith or believes should inheritlantly affect the way we conduct our work

It is a contentious subject and yet ghandi speaking to lord mountbattern said that "when your people and my people practice what jesus preached in the sermon of the mount then we not only solved the problems of your country and mine but the whole worlds"

wise words from a hindu who saw the value of working with your neighbour... is that religion or a belief that mankind has the ability to do good

i dont belive that religeous differences has any place in the workplace yet fundamental ethics of doing to others as you would have them doing to you (also known as the golden rule) should shine through..... well most of the time:p

Quickshops presentation of his question was an attack in and of itself. A fool could see this.

This is a person who is representing his brand publicly.

Before you speak on topics you know little about- and even before you ask a question, do a bit of objective reading and then ask. (There have been noted questions on these forums where posters have asked silly questions such as "what is a USP" when they could have googled it  And such OPs have been rightfully rebuked)

There are over 30,000 Christian denominations, Catholicism which has been here from the start, and the Orthodox Church which broke away from Catholicism about 1000 years ago (although they'll dispute this).

When one asks a question which is framed in the way as his was- one needs to get their facts straight.

How Protestants (who are rather fragmented) view Christianity and economic justice varies from say, how Catholicism views economic justice . Catholics have dogma, Protestants do not. Therefore the uninformed poster could inform himself on how 1/7 of the worlds population who are Catholic reconcile capitalism- which has done more to bring people- in particular ethnic minorities- out of poverty than any other economic system by researching immutable dogma of the CC.

Question: Would the predominantly white anti Christian posters on this thread dare say or ask the tomfoolery they have about Christianity about Islam?

The answer to that is obvious.

And now ask yourself why. What does that say about you?

Cowards.

Chance? Chance? You've only read evolution page one, it's not chance. Not even slightly chance. No chance here...

so yes i have religion but guess what so do you agnostics and atheist's....

and a well known encyclopedia states in part about religion "religion, a system of thought, feeling, and action that is shared by others" so by that definition we all have religion

No.

'Religion' can be like someone being 'religious' about their love of knitting:

"A cause, principle, or activity pursued with zeal or conscientious devotion."

But religion being spoken about here, i.e. 'Religion' without qualifying a subject matter is taken to mean 'belief' or 'faith' in a God.:

1. a. Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe.
b. A personal or institutionalized system grounded in such belief and worship.

2. The life or condition of a person in a religious order.
3. A set of beliefs, values, and practices based on the teachings of a spiritual leader.

As such, atheists are not religious in the sense you are and atheism is not a religion.

When such a point is made then this is seen in psychological circles as a 'projection' of one person's understanding to that of another, or another group.

Other than these obvious factual mistakes, the rest is lovely and you're absolutely right, we should just all get on.

Consistency

Hi,

Not meaning to offend or reject those who are not.

But to those who are Christians, I just wondered whether any one here feels their faith is a vital part of how they run their business?

If so do you always find the help that you seek is in synch with your faith.

For example.. I would love to pitch to a Business Angel, but cannot give a part of the business to someone with other values. It is very important to me to give a percentage to a Christian charity and it would be unfair to impose that on someone who did not have that belief.

I know many businesses give to charity and not claiming only Christians give.. but that I would feel uneasy about a conflict of interests if my business partner did not feel happy about the charities we give to or the amount.

Any thoughts?

I have not read all of the posts by far in this thread, only the first post which I shall answer.

I do not belong to a church, though I am a Christian.

I do transfer to the best of my ability the values in my faith to the business. I believe in honesty and truth, I believe in loyalty and respect.

Maybe they would, maybe they wouldn't. My point is you're being broad-brush, and so am I.

We can all link to stuff over the Internet and Google stuff and we can all state what we believe to be true. You made a statement that was a broadside against a lot of people on this thread and then you answered it.

I believe I'm arguing in the same way, only without the personal attacks of which you seem quite fond.

But while we're at it, why are you so bothered? Surely if your faith was so strong, it wouldn't matter? Your arguments are made out of anger, you attack people and demean them and you're not really making youself out to be a very nice person.

Turn the other cheek. Or whatever it says in that book.

Real weak indeed.

Your refutation skills leave a lot to desired too. What is it you do again? And are you even moderately successful? :|

Communism- the ideology- is atheistic in nature. The only religion I can think of it is compatible with is Buddhism- as no deity exists within this religion.

Not one thing in your linked article (funny you lack the ability to articulate an argument for yourself but rely on the words of others) refutes this.

That’s not very free thinking- which is what you atheists pride yourself on. Why not think for yourself seeing as you are free from the shackles of an controlling "skydaddy"? :)

The ideology which has slaughtered the most in all of history has been atheistic in nature- or anti deity- which ever way you wish to put it. You cannot escape this.

That being said I do not go out of my way to pick fights with atheists- in particular BUSINESS CONTACTS on public BUSINESS forum about this.

Why?

Because it is unprofessional.

The place for religion in modern day life, especially in the UK, is becoming less of the norm, and i can't see many people wanting to mix it with business, if basic ethics and respect for other people are adopted then i think thats as reasonable as any business should be. This is my personal opinion and i don't mean to offend anyone.

The answer to that is "no" as I've seen no evidence of this on this board. Which speaks for their cowardice and hypocrisy.

Turn the other cheek. Or whatever it says in that book.

You assume I'm a practicer of a faith. Believe it or not- I'm not.

I'm not an atheist however.

Why am I bothered?

Because I cannot abide unprofessional people- who constantly provoke people with posts on politics and religion on what is supposed to be a business forum. People who are so close minded to different people although ironically preaching tolerance on other threads.

If British businesses (what with their well-earned notorious reputation of abysmal customer service) spent as much as time running their business as opposed to flinging insults at 70% of the UK’s population (that is the rough percentage of theists) then maybe they’d be more successful and wouldn’t be losing out to the states who seem to know what they are doing business wise.

Last but not least, I’m not angry. I generally cannot abide the haughtiness very prevalent amongst the poorly learned unprofessional mediocre indigenous British population (of which many reside on this board, it seems), in particular after experiencing more intelligent populations growing up in diverse areas.

So you're an elitist?

This is yet more attack, attack, attack. There's really no need.

The OP was pretty tame and then someone quite rightly asked a pretty good question which could have been answered in a pretty good way. That question is still pretty good - "how do the two opposing ideals square up".

Capitalism by its nature goes against a lot of what Christianity talks of and so this is a good question.

However your responses haven't been those of a level-headed intelligent forum member looking to engaging in debate - you just let off a load of insults.

There's really no need, the world needs for people to discuss their differences and, importantly, understand them. If we do and if we're not afraid to have our beliefs or lack thereof challenged then this country, this continent and this world would be a much better place.

Just my 2c.

Do you know what my business name is? Do you know what line of business I'm in?

I'm not representing my company. Think about that.

Secondly, I have not given any anti-atheist rant- I have provided a fact- that atheism is an atheistic ideology which caused the death of 100 million people in just 80 years- in response to a post claiming that religion has caused more harm than anything else.

I have not mentioned anything about atheists being bad people- despite encountering the exact thing said numerous times on this thread alone about Christians/ the religous.

How do you square that with your belief? What part of your religion states you should go on to forums and rant at people who happen to share a different view to yours?

A non sequitur. Debating is not your strong point nor is reading comprehension. I've said already that I do not practice any faith. Comprende??

I'm sure you're a lovely person, but you don't come across as the sort of bloke I'd like to meet in a pub.

1) I'm not a bloke

2) I don't drink (rolling around drunk on the floor on a Friday night like most of the indigenous British I know do when visiting pubs, hardly appeals to me- not very ladylike either) , and if I did I would not do so in the venue known as a pub where trash tends to congregate in such large numbers (and no, I'm not calling all pub goers trash)

3. I wouldn't kick it with you either, even outside of a pub. I like free thinkers, of all religious or non religious sorts, who know how to handle a debate.

The reality is your kind (and I'm not referring to your lack of religous belief) are just one of the many uninformed British populace who love to jump on the bandwagon and attack a common enemy, without truly thinking about what you're saying, and how it reflects upon yourself on and upon your business. You've probably never been challenged by a theist before, which is why your refutation is so poor.

Why on earth do Christians believe they have some monopoly on ethical values when in fact some of their responses on here suggest quite the reverse? After a childhood of imposed Christianity, the hypocrisy in the faith struck me at a tender age..... and it lives on loud and strong.

God is not only available to some little exclusive group, whichever religious flag they wave. Why then do some think that if you're not brandishing a fish sticker then you're likely to err on your path and end up being turned away at those pearly gates?

I have my own beliefs which are no longer based on any particular religion's dogma or prejudices and I am as good or bad as the next person - team colours regardless. I - as I suspect many others - conduct business in line with my moral guidelines. To suggest anyone is not worthy simply because they don't wear the badge is short-sighted to say the least.

I have provided a fact- that atheism is an atheistic ideology which caused the death of 100 million people in just 80 years- in response to a post claiming that religion has caused more harm than anything else.

I had no intention of getting involved with this thread (a) because it was dragged back to life after being dormant so long and (b) because I believe that you should be able to give your point of view without getting your head bit off.

But I felt the need to respond to your statement (and to others who blame religion for killing) the fact is that religion or lack of a religion does not kill people, PEOPLE KILL PEOPLE, and the main reason is the acquisition of land, valuables and power (GREED).

Many major events in our history point to religion being the cause of far too many wars, but reality bites, most wars have been about land or power not religion.

    So you're an elitist?

I don’t like trash, regardless of the colour of trash, the race of trash, the religion of trash or the sexual orientation of trash. Does that answer your question?

PS- the British have been the most elitist people I've yet to encounter. The Americans, alongside the Australians (where I grew up for 6 years) have been the most down to earth. Intresting how the Brits love to attack the Yanks claiming otherwise however...

The OP was pretty tame and then someone quite rightly asked a pretty good question which could have been answered in a pretty good way.

Catch up. The OP is not a problem- not in the slightest. The posts I initially called out in response to the OP- amongst many others is the problem. Yours included. Stop projecting.

Capitalism by its nature goes against a lot of what Christianity talks of and so this is a good question.

No it doesn’t. The onus is on you to prove this. Saying something is so doesn't make it so.

Demonstrate how it does, or retract your statement. Also, demonstrate which Christian denomination / Church it goes against, using the not only scripture but dogmatic proclamations (with denominations in which they exist).

You probably won’t be able to do this without copying and pasting of some website, ideas which are easily refutable as it is clear you know little about Christianity and probably, other religions too.

However your responses haven't been those of a level-headed intelligent forum member looking to engaging in debate

    Nor have yours been.

    - you just let off a load of insults.

As you and your comrades have. You simply have received the acid you have flung at 3/4 of the British population back at yourself.

    Hurts, does it?

There's really no need, the world needs for people to discuss their differences and, importantly, understand them. If we do and if we're not afraid to have our beliefs or lack thereof challenged then this country, this continent and this world would be a much better place.

    Just my 2c.

If only you and your anti Christian comrades practiced just this, and there would have been peace.

If you read back, the OP never intended to start a discussion like the one carried by some of the anti Christian bigots on this forum who didn't answer her question but went on the attack of Christianity. They need to practice what you are preaching now.

I'm happy to have faith challenged, but in the correct MEDIUM (not a business forum) and have facts presented, not unintelligent rambling prejudice being disguised as fair debate.
