apprenticeship training

I am considering offering apprenticeship training to my deputy manager who has worked for two years with us. He seems eager to learn. He is currently on £11.44 an hour. Will it be ok if I offer a reduced pay of £10 an hour the apprentice pay to him, as I will have to pay his 6 hours a week off-the-job learning for one year? Business has been tough, I won’t be able to fund him £11.44 a hour for 6 hours a week off the learning.

If it is a genuine3 apprenticeship then that will be OK for the first year (provided he agrees). If he is over 19 after the first year of the apprenticeship he must be paid at the age-appropriate National Minimum Wage.

If he is already your Assistant Manager, will he actually get anything out of being a apprentice other than a piece of paper
In house training might be a good alternative and more helpful to your company
