    ^That's because they don't want to walk straight into an easy no when the alternative is to call back another time to get put through to the person you want to speak with.

    ... Obviously this approach is completely flawed when speaking with micro businesses and the MD is the person who answers the phone. :)

    but on refusal, the phone went dead. Got a feeling they'll ring back later, sadly they'll be talking to my call blocker. This guy seemed to have a problem telling me what he wanted - fine, he doesnt get what he wants then.

    Find it strange that these callers go to all that trouble of dialling numbers, starting dialogue, re-questioning, probing and then not giving out basic further info eg: what the call is about.

    Thanks to event domains we now have a step by step guide outlining how to ensure the cold caller phones time after time, trying to get to speak to the imaginary person who he wasn't allowed to speak to the first time. :D

    And you lot wonder why you get plagued by cold calls:rolleyes:

    I mean, how badly do these callers want the business huh?

    Look, a request to know what the damn call is about, is not unreasonable. Ofcourse gatekeepers will challenge what the call is about, or they end up transferring hoards of callers selling inappropriate goods for the company's needs.

    And the above is just another reason why stupid cold callers with even smaller micro businesses than the one's they think their calling, get the 'blocked' or 'slammed-down' phone treatment.

    But at the end of the day, getting angry with someone you want business from isnt smart. Cold callers want your money, so they must be accommodating with basic info and really, really should do their research, if only to know who their dealing with.

    Assuming anyone is a micro business, just from a basic conversation alone is a huge mistake, that can cost more than a lost sale.

    Get to the decision-maker, that is the direct sales mantra. They don't want to waste time talking to the gate-keeper, so they'll either have a persuasive technique to get beyond the gate-keeper or they'll try and bludgeon their way through as they did to you :D

    It will only be tin pot businesses who play these kind of games with them anyway. If I were a cold caller id take it as a signal that you couldn't afford what I was selling anyway.

    I don't think it's about that. It's about choosing how you want to allocate your own time and choosing not to waste it listening to cold callers.

    No, I think I am right in saying that "we lot" know very well why we get plagued by cold calls. I doubt that any of us wonder about it all quite frankly.

    We get plagued by cold calls because the telesales industry has many people operating within it who ignore the TPS and the CTPS and who do not care about how many people they upset in their little numbers games.

    We get plagued by cold callers because there is too little regulation in your industry and too many poorly trained and downright objectionable people who don't care a toss about the people they are harassing.

    Hopefully further regulation will be forthcoming. When it does all of you who are operating within the guidelines can then relax and get on with doing it professionally and "we lot" who do not want it can opt out. :)

    Such an obvious thread. BDW, Event domain I can gather are one man bands, and for sure if the phone kept ringing with cold callers I would get slightly peed off. But how you deal with them (another cold caller defeated) is not right, someone has a job and has the right to earn a living in the way that any other people do, printers, postmen, shop workers, all a right to earn a living, why dont you listen for a minute and say thank you for calling but Im ok. Im a one man business I get them all the time. But I tend to deal with people differently and it never winds me up never. Had three at the office yesterday and then 1 on the mobile also - he wanted to talk about saving mobile costs, said cant speak at the moment in the middle of something can you call me back - if hes offering me a saving Im all ears. If you are on the TPS/CTPS list, then no you shouldnt be getting calls at all. I dont do it, if I have data that is over 28 days old I go and check each number before I call, and have to pay for this service also. This is why I refer back to the "under one umbrella" catergory

    You never know who is at the end of that phone line or what their finances are. I'm probably worth £350k myself, never mind what my web properties went for.

    Never underestimate anyone, especially when cold-calling :D

    I get it...I have a house worth about £200k...is that what you mean?

    Or do you mean you have £350k in the bank?

    BDW might be a one-man show (I dunno), but I have a business partner, so I'm not.

    I dont mind people earning money, running a biz etc, but fact is, the abundance of irritating cold calls is bad and its going to get far worse as advertising spend increases, product sales increases etc.

    Like its been said before - most dont mind the good salespeople, providing the product is matched to the right potential buyer.

    Yeah, he does a fair bit... has to, more than I do. We give phone numbers to select clients, so we can control it better.

    But people just sign-up to the websites anyway, so probably dont need a phone for sales at all. So many websites make the sales, so telesales isnt needed.

    Please event domain can you put something up - website im sure we are all open to learning from you - I need proof can you be more open. In my head a succesful person never braggs never they keep it to themselves. Put the stats up event on how you have been so successful = and you cant answer a cold call it just makes no sense Wheres your website?

    My home number was an old number that my phone company purchased and gave to me. I am always getting sales calls for the same guy who has never lived at my address.

    I got a cold call from someone talking about being missold some financial products and how I could claim back these payments if I had.

    I explained about it being a wrong number and the lass asked me if I got a lot of these calls? I explained that I did so she then proceeded to tell me about TPS and how I could stop receiving any further calls if I wanted them to stop. She could have ended the call when I said it was a wrong number but she took the time out to try and help me.

    Are BT so short of competent telesales agents, they have to outsource Call Centres to India now, and if the industry's image is so squeaky clean, then why do Indians have to call themselves British names to fool people, when it fools noone as soon as they start speaking :eek: And it makes me shudder to know there's some manager dude actually making them do this stuff.

    There are about a billion people in India. India als has a large Christian population who often take westernised names for their children. Not everybody in India has to have an Indian name :)

    There's so many businesses that run purely off web sales. Certain sites are built for this purpose alone.
