Affiliate program?

Hi,

I've just been trying to learn about affiliate programs, as i've seen one I fancy trying..I couldn't find anywhere to tell me how much it costs? Or what it involves exactly, they just think everyone who has a web site is a techno' buff and knows all about affiliate programs.

Is it the same as link swapping, but with banners too?

Affiliate marketing is where you get someone to send traffic through links to you and then pay them either per click, per sign up or a commision per sale depending upon what you actually want to do.

So someone with a shopping directory puts up text links or banners and encourages surfers to visit you via these. They are promoting you in effect and you give them commission when an action is done by the visitor.

It is cost effective. There are many networks which vary in set up costs or you can get an independent scheme.

Hi Jayne - an affiliate program is where a company will pay you a commission on any sales resulting from clicks on links from your site (or in your email newsletters) to theirs. For example one of the first affiliate programs was started by amazon.com whereby you could recommend or review a book on your site and then include a link to amazon with your affiliate id and if the visitor purchased that book (or any other one) you get a commission. The purchase or other action (it could be a sales lead, brochure/catalogue request or insurance quote request, for example) usually has to take place within a specific time period (usually set by a 'cookie') - this could be anything from 1 day to a week, a month, a year (or longer).

Companies either run their affiliate program 'in house' or through a third party network (who takes care of paying affiliate checks as well as doing all the tracking through their software) or a combination of the two (in house and third party). Either way, your sales are tracked by having your unique affiliate id in your links.

I'm not quite clear whether you're interested in affiliate marketing from the standpoint of being an affiliate or running an affiliate program.

Here's how it works from the standpoint of being someone's affiliate...

Ok, so let's say my hobby is 80s music and collectables and I want to build a website about it.

However, I want to be able to generate some income by recommending other's products.

So let's say I build a page of my top ten 80s icons...

At the end of that page I'd provide a link to another site recommending their products, it may be CD's, posters, concert tickets, yo get the idea.

Now, if I'm in their affiliate program and a site visitor clicks over to their site and purchases £100 worth of CD's or whatever, the company pays me a commission for that sale.

Another example, I'm an affiliate for sitesel.com

http://www.sitesell.com/bigmix.html

See the bigmix.html part of the address? That tells Sitesell that whoever has visited their site and hopefully bought something, did so because I provided the link. Therefore they know who to reward for that sale.

The gbest way of finding out how it works is by joining a good affiliate program.

The sitesell one is damn good, simple because they show you exactly how to play the affiliate game properly. they have tons of free stuff to download that can help you build up income etc etc etc, I won't bore you with the details, just take a look at

Joining would also give you access to one of the best forums I've come across on the internet, and most of you will know that there are view few of those :)

Jayne. Hi. We've just started listing tradeDoubler adverts to see what happens (its the banner adverts at the top of webit.net). We used Google but whist it generated money we though it 'cheapened' the look of the site. One key difference is Google pays per click, whilst an Affiliate (for the most part) pays on purchase.

I'm learning loads from the forums, leave it logged on all day and when I get stuck on something i'm doing, I nip on here and have a read.

Usually someone has asked a question i'm stuck on and I search for it, if not I post a new one. When i've learned more, i'll probably not be on as much..I was working untill 1.10 am this morning and up again at 8am. I'm putting lots of hours into learning :D

So I can do both :D and my bakery biz too, workaholic :lol:

Just had a quick look at your site, very nice idea.

However, I wouldn't put an e-mail link on your site, you're asking for trouble regarding the spamming robots. Better to have a dedicated contact form.

Not heard about spamming robots, heard about spam, is this different? I put my email on so customers could contact me direct, easier I thought. I have got a contact form on the contact page.

Spamming robts are little programs that search the internet for e-mail links like yours. they then take your e-mail address back to their mother ship's database. You'll then find you're receiving all sorts of promises of sexual excitement, drugs to increase that excitement, untold fortunes in the form of high interest credit, you get the picture...

your contact form should be enough these days as most people are used to filling in contact forms rather than a direct e-mail.
