Advice needed for online payment provider

Hi all,

I will be launching my e-commerce (beauty products) site soon and am looking into which online payment provider I should go with.

My website is with Wix and I can go with Wix payment but their rates are higher than most. I looked into Stripe but their reviews were terrible (refunding without investigation etc).

Which online payment provider are you using/ would recommend? Initially, I will only be selling in the UK but will go into the EU in the next phase.

Any help appreciated.

We've used one called izettle. It's been excellent. Very very easy to use.

That didn't even cross my mind. Does Paypal charges a monthly fee? i know Stripe doesn't.

We, for many years, have used Secure Trading.

However, the unauthorised return issue of which you speak is not going to be unique to Stripe. The reality is, the distance selling regs pretty much mean you are going to be accepting returns more or less every time the customer requests it. And the anecdotal reports are just that.

Sorry not sure. We've used it for sending payment links to people's phones and email

Yes, I am, and no, no issues with returns. But my customer profile may be different from yours, mine are not "buy and try" type products.

My wife has an online business selling gifts, and she offers PayPal and Stripe as payment options. Gotta say the combination of PayPal and a card processor option works well and increased her sales significantly from when she only offered PayPal, and she hasn't had any issues with Stripe at all and it was very easy to setup (so far - only been going a few months tho)

I'd say Stripe - unless your are expecting your customers to charge back often.

It is true that Stripe pretty much automatically refund disputed transaction with zero quibble and then charge you for the privilege, totally ignoring terms and conditions etc.

But if you have a good refund policy and not ripping customers off then your charge backs should be few and far between or close to zero.

It seems having multiple methods increases conversion, some like the ease of PayPal and don'tlike giving their cards away, others just don't like PayPal or think ( incorrectly ) they need a PayPal account.

When I was in ecommerce ( admittedly 10 years ago ) when I added PayPal on top of cards (SagePay) my sales went up 10% that was significant.

PayPal still has a bit of an eBay stigma attached to it, outside of the US anyway. It's reducing, but it is still there. I agree with your sentiment here, and it's what I've seen myself too and would always recommend to anyone in ecommerce to have PayPal plus one other of their preferred choice of payment service provider.
One other one worth considering is Google Pay, I've never really given it much thought before but it's integration into Woocommerce is really good and makes for the most efficient One-Click purchase I've ever seen (outside of Amazon anyway).

Another vote for Starling and Stripe. PayPal ok for one-time subscriptions, but they can be a pain for recurring subscriptions.

Paypal offer in person payment via an app on your phone no need to by any low device. Withh stripe you can accept payments online from your website took me a while to work out bet not too difficult.

Start with Paypal & Stripe and when monthly transactions go over £1000-1500 per month, look at getting a proper merchant account.

What's the advantage? At 1.4%+20p and no monthly fee, Stripe is a lot more competitive than the rates many merchant accounts offer.

Maybe it's changed, but that level of fees certainly weren't offered to me some years ago, and I was doing a lot more than £1500.

Debit and credit are now a %.

Sure, there can be other additional costs, but you can find some great value providers out there!

It always was a %, but I wasn't offered a % that low. This was back in 2013, from memory, it was around 1.2%.
