Hey guys,

Posted this in the main business ection before i saw this section so apologies if you are reading this twice.

Anyhow, I started an online business a few months ago selling artwork. The website was completed a few days ago and so we are now wondering how best to start advertising.
We have used google adwords, looking into SEO and we have begun to blog on the internet to get our name out.
We have a small advertising budget, any ideas on how best to blog or advertise?

The website is candoart.co.uk if you fancy a peak.

If you want to get ranked for anything to do with artwork you will have to make some major changes to the website. At the moment there is not one single page that google will be able to index and rank. The main problem is the almost complete lack of indexable content. Everything is images which google can't 'read'. You also have the same title on every page so google will not be able to seperate the homepage from all the others.

however if you are happy to rely on PPC to bring in the visitors then leaves things as they are.

If you intend to blog then you need a blog. Either integrate it into the site or set up a new domain. Where are you blogging at the moment?

Agree with the above......SEO shouldn't be an after thought but unfortunately many people do fall into that trap. SEO is as important, if not more important than design. Getting the site up and looking nice is the easy part I'm sorry to say.

I haven't even looked at your site but going by what these guys are saying it would be wise to get your site sorted first. Structure, content and crawlability with the required elements.

It's worth doing now then you can crack on promoting it.

Some of the tips that came to my mind immediately after I took a look at you site are

1. Do some keyword research and come up with keywords which your potential buyers will be putting in google when they want to buy what you offer.

2. write keyword optimized articles and put them as description of your items. Also add Page Titles and Meta Tags for each page of your site.

3. Get Backlinks to your site pages from your blog and elsewhere.

4. Continue to do PPC but track whick keywords convert into sales and spend money on them only and get rid of the keywords which don't convert.

I hope it helps somewhat.

Thanks

Hi -

Congratulations on the site and i'm sure you're aware by the posts already there is a lot of work you can get started on before you start a 'campaign'.

Advertising and marketing online can be incredibly cost effective - even with small or zero budgets - its just about getting in front of your target audience as much as possible with the right messages.

We've written dozens of blogs and content on social media marketing, and how to get traction from online social media today.

I would always advise a ppc campaign even if it is just a few pounds a day - but theres no point in doing anything if you don't know what you're doing. PPC for start ups and people with limited internet knowledge (im not saying you have, just a general comment) is a minefield, even if it may seem straightforward.

Spend some time doing a competitor anaylsis and seeing what the guys are doing that are where you want to be - you can replicate this to your level and implement new strategies and online technologies that will keep you ahead of your competitors in the future.

Have a look at our site for the blogs and blog archive from 2008 and try and utilise as much as possible that makes sense for your budget and business.

Hope that is useful advice - good luck.

Hi

I use BT Tradespace for some of our online promotions. Once you have set up your 'webpage' you can get involved with the community forums and talk about your services to your hearts content! You can add blogs, videos, pictures, web links etc.. For a small business it is fantastic as you can network with other users and share advice. We get hits to our site every day! A great way of advertising for free!

:)
