Accounting/Invoicing Software for Sole Trader

Hi all.

I'm currently signed up with Quickbooks Self Employed, whilst i do generally like the software i have have found it to be a little limited in some areas. (Not being able to add bank details on an invoice)

Does anyone have any other recommendations? I'm not looking to spend more than £10 a month really.

I've seen Sage One Start,but i'm not sure that is as helpful as quickbooks self employd in terms of Self Assessment etc.

Thoughts would be appreciated

FreeAgent is a good software with lots of functions and it is perfect for sole traders. You can either subscribe via an accountant or directly with FreeAgent.

Instead of changing your software, which requires migration of data, and a new learning curve, why don't you order specific invoice letterhead that has your bank details pre-printed on it? Or, simply pre-print your bank details on a number of pages, then feed them through the printer again when you're printing the invoice?

Alternatively, order a stamp from your stationer so you can quickly stamp your bank details on your invoice.

I don't think the OP was referring to paper invoices. Migration to a new software is not as difficult. It will only involve entering the opening balances in the new software and adjusting the first vat return if applicable.

Possibly a bad idea, depending on the printer.

This should work for most printers. But it also depends on what the OPs requirements are. My initial suggestion was just an alternative to completely changing the accounting system. Perhaps it's an easier solution for some people.

are you sure you cannot add your bank details to an Invoice in QBO?
I will have a look as I am sure you can.
How many bills do you send out a month?
There is a version of Xero - Xero starter which is £9 per month which is IMO the best cloud bookkeeping software on market which will do the job you require.

For payments you should also maybe look at adding GoCardless to the invoice as it helps speed up your payment terms.

You can add the bank details to your invoices by setting it in the footer of your custom invoice. Select gear icon when generating new invoice > Click Content tab > Enter payment details in the box provided.

I'd also recommend Xero as I think it's easier to use than Quickbooks, and the layout makes it easier to navigate around.

Appreciate the replies, to clarify.

• I was referring to invoices that are sent via email, so the printed solution isn't really an option.
• Quickbooks Online does give you the option, Quickbooks Self Employed is a more 'watered down' version of Quickbooks i believe, aimed at the Sole Trader. At the moment, you can't add your bank details to the invoice! (Ridiculous i know) I do quite like this sytem as it helps with the self assessment, fills in most of the relevant boxes for you by the looks of it
• I have looked at Xero and previously used it, but i think the middle option at £22 is too much for me,and the starter option is probably a little too light?

Just looking at FreeAgent now.

It seems fairly straightforward, whilst having quite a lot of options there too. The Self Assessment side of it looks simple too!

GnuCash is totally free and will do everything QB does and more, inc. P&L, charts, payroll, multiple currencies, interface with bank accounts, SQL, QIF, OFX import and export, cheque runsand all sorts of other 'fun' things!

Try www.quickfile.co.uk - free up to a number of transactions and then about £54.00 for the year. You can add in your bank details on the invoice, use for VAT reconciliation, run reports and many others. I've been using it myself and for a number of clients (sole traders and ltd companies) for about 5 years now and does everything I need it to do and so much easier than Xero.

I was looking for the invoice to be sent from the system to their email address. Quick Books Self Employed just doesn't have this option at all. The more i look into their package, the worse it seems actually :/

I use QB Desktop which has the facility to make custom invoice templates, which in turn have Customer Message Box. Does your invoice have the facility to add a message box? In which case, you can set your bank details as one of the customer messages. Otherwise, I add them in the body of the invoice. Go straight to the description column and free type......

Have you seen or tried Accounts Portal?

Its a system I personally use and lots of my firms clients use. It works well and is within budget. If your accountant uses it they may be able to get you a discount too.

Xero offers convention from Quickbooks directly, I personally would recommend it over any other commercial software when looking to transfer from Quickbooks.
