    Dear lovely folk at Sift,

The idea of a private accountants' forum has been mentioned before I believe.

Sadly AWeb, which ought to provide a forum for accountants to discuss among themselves, has turned into something verging on the unpleasant. Having a forum to discuss technical points is an invaluable resource and the curent Accounts and Finance forum is not a suitable arena for this.

I would be grateful to hear of your thoughts and whether you have any plans for implementing this feature in the near future.

    Many thanks! :)

I will get Darren and Steve to have at look at this soon.

On the subject of AccountingWEB.co.uk - that was some interestgin feedback, Jenni, I wonder if you would PM me with some specifics? AWEB will be relaunched this summer with oodles more functionality which we hope will open up more forum-esque space and activity and be much more user friendly. I know it's a while off but it will be super!

    Hi Becky

'Unpleasant' was possibly the wrong word. 'Not very useful' might be more accurate.

There was a discussion on it, in fact a couple:
    here and here
The OPs in both these threads sum it up.

A reloaded AWeb sounds fab, I look forward to seeing it.

I still like the idea of having a private accountants' forum on here - simply because there are quite a few of us and we have a great community already.

Even with a new face, the general atmosphere on AWeb is different (see the linked posts) and I don't know if this will change with (even) a (dramatic) facelift.

Thanks for getting back Becky :)

I think you would need to introduce, monitor and control posting etiquette over at AWEB.

I was on the receiving end of some nasty comments over there and Steve Roth stepped in to delete them.

I don't find it as friendly as here! Hopefully it will change - or maybe accountants are just not nice people!

Jenni, had you considered it is precisely a 3 minute job to create such a private forum?? - You can even force the misers to pay!!!

And then you can do it how you want it....not how vested interests want it to be.

    I know that ;)

I just remembered there had been talk on UKBF about it and was wondering if there was anything in the offing.

    We'll see what happens

If it's something that won't be done on here then i'd be willing to set one up think it would be a viable and useful alternative to Aweb for the reasons you outline and from what I and others have also mentioned.

Could do it for UKBF accountants only so we all one big happy family :)

I think you missed the most important issue Gillie

Which is to succeed it has to be private and subscription (however small)

Nope I didn't - it is private and its a place where fellow professionals can go and chat and pick the brains of others without having potential or existing clients viewing the statements.

Its not meant as a money earner - heck we are getting generous in our old age!!

We have been looking into the idea of private discussion groups for some time. AccountingWEB is being relaunched in a couple of weeks and the new functionality will include the ability to create private or open discussion groups which can be administered by members of the community.

Can we have a private discussion group for each speciality? I want to be in the one for turnip squeezers and associated trades.

I suppose you could have one for SEO but I suspect it wouldn't be very successful as it's such a precise and well regulated industry.

Ok so just to clarify the Accountants Forum has been set up to act as a support group for professional Accountants primarily engaged in offering services to the SME sector.

Whether a sole practictioner, or in partnership there are always occasions, when new issues arise that would benefit from being able to seek advice from others in a private manner, away from the possibility of a client, or an associate having access to the discussion.

A recent example was an accountant seeking a pointer on the taxation of a transaction, which his client read and caused an erosion of faith.

In todays complex frameworks of increasing business regulation and more draconian penalty regimes than in halycon times, a quick word of reassurance from a fellow professional may ease the worry and stress incumbent on us all.

So with this in mind when you join you are asked to provide details such that it can be ascertained that you are in the profession so that you can be comfortable in the knowledge clients cannot pick up on what you say.

Should the various bean counters on here wish to take advantage of a private forum whilst sift makes up its mind, the facility is available as per my signature.

"bean counters" is a forbidden word Gillie!

The combined weight of the worlds bean people are apt to descend with vitriol upon you for thinking such disrespectful thoughts......

And seem to have done, since the link to your forum seems slightly knackered

Accountingweb's got two things wrong with it:

Firstly, many of the contestants wouldn't say boo to a goose in real life, but grow horns online whenever they spot a fellow professional floundering. Victims are sometimes gored by the herd.

Secondly, many of the contestants develop king-sized egos when they think they know something their victim does not, and often become as personal and judgemental as Simon Cowell with ear-ache.

By comparison the accountants on UKBF are outgoing and user-friendly; A-web just has too many angry accountants trolling around and grinding their axes.

btw there's no reason your accountants should have an answer for everything you throw at them. Most of us are tre dumb. Many of us don't even know whether we're practicing or practising.
