Background
I decided I want to set up a business around 7 - 8 years ago, I had a few different ideas but did not pursue them as I did not have the capital and have always been set on starting a company that requires low start up costs.

After a year or so, I decided I’m going to start a UX consultancy, focusing on helping businesses who are struggling with website conversions. Unfortunately, there a large number of business spending thousands every month on marketing by driving traffic to their website, but do not see the returns expected. The problem a lot of the time is that they are driving traffic to a website that is not user friendly.

So I spent the next 5 - 6 years studying UX and researching how other consultants complete their audits, also learning other important elements of business such as branding, marketing etc. During this time I found this to be a low competition niche with high profit margins and also found there is a common rigid auditing process that provides clients with a UX report with a list of disconnected flaws. I restructured our audit process to be more systematic and strategic. Our new methodology is based on in-house frameworks that we apply based on a website's specific condition.

Problem
Due to my lack of understanding in the early stages of my journey I set up 2 companies opened a business account, took a loan etc. At this stage I had a lot more work to do before these steps were required.

This resulted in one of the companies being struck off and the other company “in the red” with outstanding confirmation statements, no annual accounts submitted. I did not know about the “Dormant” status and had no access to funds to pay the incoming fines.

Why am I here
I’m at a point where I am ready to launch. I have an extremely low cost marketing plan that will allow us to simply “press a button” for more clients and have spent a long time systemising the process so audits can be completed efficiently without losing quality, allowing us to scale extremely quickly.

Based on my understanding of the competition and the huge need for this service, I am extremely confident the business will be successful, but my issue is where to start.

This is where I am currently

  • The business accounts look bad. If a potential client were to look up the company this is likely to put them off, as this can be seen as a major red flag.
  • I have considered looking for an investor, but struggle to find, as I only need a very small amount of capital, maybe around 2k. I can access it from friends and family but they lack an understanding of the business concept, I gave up trying. Investor platforms are too robotic for me, I prefer a simpler way of connecting with an investor.
  • A grant. Have not found a platform yet that is simple and straight forward that works for my situation. Also my company accounts and loan have provided friction during sign up.
  • Get started with whatever I have to hand. If I could I would. But this is a high ticket service and if I were to do this I believe this would somewhat damage the company's credibility. Some may not care about this as it’s just the beginning, but I do.
  • Get 1 client. If I could get one client the profit would cover what I need. But to get the client would require one of the above.

Any advice is welcome and if anyone has any platforms or channels to help, feel free to share

Forget the companies. Start out as a sole-trader and use your UX skills to market the service. Employ your button press to get clients and it’s job done.

Expect lots of rejection. Many businesses have been burnt dealing with marketing ‘experts’ so you will need to be a salesman first and UX expert second.

It's not unusual for a start up to have bad accounts. Make a virtue of the fact that you've invested before going to market.

If you need cash, a start up loan should help, and they will give you a mentor (Quality varies a lot)

Other than that, you are a marketing business, so get marketing

If you can do that, sell this process!

Whilst you can go somewhere like startuploans.co.uk, for £2k I would bootstrap - get a credit card or take out a personal loan.

As mentioned, maybe start as self employed or even start a new business with a clean history.

You've spent 8 years prevaricating! You've done everything but the one thing you really need to do and that's get a client and get started. No start-up every had a fully formed, perfect product before launch, they start with something that is good enough to do something useful, get some income and a client list.

£2k is a credit card, it's not money that's preventing you, it lack of customers; how are you going to find your first clients? How are you marketing this?

This could work. Though I would be hoping on the fact that they don't click on the director, as it would bring up my other companies.
    They will.

If this was B2C I would agree. B2B goes right over their heads.

Irrelevant. Investors- including family - invest in people, not ideas. You need to convince them that you have what it takes to make a success of this business - which you currently aren't doing on here.

You are doing anying other than what you actually need to do.

    JFDI!

    - Sell anything you dont need.
    - Go out and clean cars
    - Get a credit card.
    - Apply for a start up loan
    - Bootstrap.

As starting goes, yours is as easy as it gets. No premises, no stock or capex, no licences permits or accreditations - just a bit of initiative and resilience.

If you aren't up for it get yourself a job until you are.

@P + P - you are prevaricating and putting off launching for some unknown reason. If you have the skills to help a business and the means to generate leads you can start today. You don't need the money, you just need to get started.

My main issue was the bad accounts. Not having the funds to complete the website etc, reduced my confidence to present my services. And although I am extremely confident I can provide a good service, the companies presentation still matters.

I just needed a nudge to get started, regardless of what I have.

The feedback is clear and I do actually have enough to get started (with or without the funds).

I have a few ways to market this service, one of which is partnering with marketing specialists as they have access to my ideal clients. This, with the resources I have which include the service breakdown, costs, benefits should be enough. Also, I'll be offering a free review for those wanting a sample of work before fully committing.

The feedback I've received is what needed to hear

The website will never be finished, it will always be a work in progress.

    Just do it!

Find a local company and offer a free service as long as you can use there results to publicise your product without actually mentioning them, basically a test your solution actually works. You will find some unexpected problems along the way that help you improve your solution, I mention local company so you can physically work with the owner at low cost to yourself
