A few questions about SEO

Hi everybody!

I'm trying to get my site noticed and have a few questions about SEO. I've read a few guides but there seems to be too much info out there and a lot of it is conflicting. I would really appreciate a bit of help with this, please!

I've been working on my website for about two months now and didn't have a clue about anything really when I started. I've signed up for google webmaster tools and, after a couple of weeks, noticed there was nothing showing up in my keywords. After a bit of pondering I noticed I hadn't put commas between my keywords in the meta data (I hadn't been told to), so now I've put in commas and the data is showing up. My first question is - should my keywords be single words or short phrases? Is there any point using the same word twice eg. ethical gifts, unusual gifts?

I've also read that the company/website name shouldn't be in the page title meta data. If this is true, what should the titles be?

Are there any example pages with good keywords/descriptions I could have a look at to see if I'm on the right tracks? I think mine are a bit repetetive but want to get my point across if you see what I mean.

Thanks so much!

My tip would be to google your own product - using search terms you think would be chosen by a range of potential visors/customers. Note which sites appear high-up in the rankings. Visit those sites. look at the source code and/or use one of the free SEO tools to analyse the site and work out why they are ranked so highly.

Do similar. It isn't magic, it isn't hard. Any fool can do it: I did.

Sure, using some of the other techniques to build links to your site might just as well be sold to others to do for you if you can't be as shameless as they can be on your behalf :) or if your time is more valuable than their charges, but really, there's not a lot of skill or knowledge needed, just balls of brass. Don't go paying top dollar, and then only pay for results, results which endure over time and for search terms which are not so narrow or focussed as to be virtually a googlewhack.

The page title meta data should basically describe your business and have some keywords in it... I think!

When I had my carpet cleaning business, the meta data on each page was generally something like: Carpet Cleaning in Portsmouth, Rug Cleaning in Portsmouth etc etc.

I'm certainly not an expert on SEO, but I think that's how it's done. I also believe that renaming any photos on your site to include keywords also helps a little.
