How do you decide which AI news is actually worth acting on?

Genuine question for anyone running a small business: how do you filter AI news to figure out what actually matters versus what's just noise?

I run a daily AI news site and the thing that keeps coming up in our own research is that most "big AI announcement" headlines don't actually change anything for a small business owner day to day. Meanwhile the genuinely useful stuff (a pricing change, a tool going free, a real capability that solves a specific workflow problem) gets buried under hype.

Curious what filters people here actually use. Do you follow specific newsletters, wait for it to show up in your industry's trade press, or just ignore it until a customer or competitor forces the issue?

Unfortunately, especially for you, there is so much junk AI noise that almost all business owners choose to ignore it all.
Everyone, including so many new members joining this community, shows up saying AI this and AI that, all looking for a problem their new idea solves. Then you have people showing up using unfiltered AI to post really rubbish answers to posts, or even posting massive long posts of waffle. It's no surprise that everyone is turning off to AI.

This is coming from someone who see's the benefit of AI when used properly. The issue is that so many things, even things that are not AI, are being badged as AI. Then AI is being shoved down people's throats all the time.

What is needed is some people just showing up and talking sense, labelling AI as just one tool in a toolbox, and talking about it like it is just a tool that is not some miracle thing that if you ain't using it you're missing out.

When you have been in business for decades you can spot what is not real a mile off .

We are experimenting with some AI but on the same note being a very small business we are still using analogue systems effectively

I'm fairly used to people telling me a load of old waffle when they look me in the eye ,so I'm hardly going to take any notice of a couple of chips :cool:

Oh I'm not so sure.

I think news (I mean proper news by the way) on any evolving and advancements in all tech is worth keeping up to date on, irrespective of what it is. AI is just another form of technology worth keeping up to date on, just like the Internet was, new hardware advancements on processor types, all really.

If as a business owner if you fail to keep yourself informed of new technology, and fail to see if that technology could impact your business, your competitors may not make that same mistake.

There has to be a limit to what business owners can 'keep up to date with'. In my own field, Knowing the current and proposed law is primary. Keeping abreast of all new technology - not just AI - would be too time consuming. Being aware and keeping an eye out is more realistic.

I fail to see how that is FOMO, annd also isn’t that what newspapers and other specialist publications are for? Is it not their remit to collate and bring together all the industry impacting technology, laws, trends, etc.

Then if something looks ground breaking doing some further personal research is just good business sense.

Surely reading a handful of industry specialist publications isn’t beyond the reach of a mere mortal?

We shall, but for my own personal experience it has been my duty and responsibility to do exactly what I say here and what I did in my own business.

I subscribed to various publications, I researched, I studied, and I tested.
It was my responsibility to keep ahead of the curve, to try and predict what may or may not develop, both in technology and in legislation. That was my job as the boss, and the jobs of my team depended on me doing this.

We can agree to disagree, but for my part I speak from personal experience and a responsibility that I did not take lightly.

I am sure that you would not be surprised by the number of people who do not even think about being kept up to date (or even brought up to date) about relevant things when starting a business. I think AI is potentially making it worse by offering easy answers that, in some cases, are way off!

Unfortunately yes, I’ve seen first hand examples where individuals have allowed AI to do their thinking for them, and trusted the AI response without challenge.

Talking to friends today and it's not AI news we are interested in reading. What we want is relevant business news which may include AI stories that are applicable to my business.

I want news on emerging technology so that I can interpret it for my own purposes so that I may innovate before someone else has the ideas before I do :cool:

Aye, but it doesn’t mean those who do should to be questioned as if wanting to innovate or invent is a bad thing.

Good point. The problem I have is separating the dross from the useful stuff. I’ve been doing a lot of work on security headers and XSS. AI news often looks at the big picture when what I need is down in the weeds. Most of the AI news isn’t helpful when investigating security issues AI is reporting.
