Website vs social media: Which is enough for starting dropshipping or affiliate marketing?

I’m planning to start a dropshipping/affiliate marketing business and wondering whether I really need a website. Can I just rely on social media platforms to generate traffic and sales, or is having a site essential for long-term growth and SEO?

Previously, I’ve tried small campaigns using just social media with some success, but now I want to scale. There are so many products and niches, and I’m not sure whether creating multiple landing pages for each product is necessary, or if I should focus on just a few key pages/posts.

Would love to hear what works best in 2025 for beginners vs scaling businesses.

Depends what you are selling and to whom.

As an aside, US consumers may respond differently to online marketing than those in the UK. Or those in Bangladesh where you are located.

socialmedia accounts: everyone can open one with any given name. Ergo no credibility.
A website has a name and you buy a domain, as a company or not but you build credibility with it.

Any Commercial Event comes with a cost. The bigger the competition, usually the higher is the cost.

Social media is not the answer for every business
None of our customers look for their transport suppliers on SM .Maybe LinkedIn at an absolute stretch.
I can honestly say that I have had more business from this site than SM

If you do not have a lot of money for marketing, neither will really help.

Please do not be drawn into thinking that throwing up stuff on SM will make you a fortune. Sure, it does happen (less now), but with unique/targeted products, viral posting and a lot of luck.

Look at their profile then their website. They claim to be marketing experts but unsure of where they are located. Certainly not the UK.

Firstly, really sorry for bumping such an old thread, but nowadays it is trendy topic about aff marketing, and I'm literally into it, so for affiliate marketing specifically, I’d treat social media more as a traffic source rather than the actual foundation of the business. It’s useful for finding what content works and bringing people in, but you’re building on someone else’s platform. A simple website with useful content, reviews, comparisons, or guides gives you something that can keep bringing traffic from search over time. I wouldn’t create dozens of pages for every product either — I’d focus on a niche and build a few quality pieces of content around topics people are actually searching for. Social media can help speed things up, but having your own site makes the business much more stable in the long run.
