What margins do retailers and distributors expect in the FMCG food industry? I'm trying to work out my margin stack and see if my product idea is feasible, but I'm seeing a lot of conflicting numbers, so I would find it really helpful to hear directly from people actually in the industry.
Thanks!

It depends on the products and clients.

Retail direct could be 40-60% ex vat. Distributors 5-20%.

Then there are the additional costs - settlement, marketing, distribution.

I'd also think about volume, making 50% on something sounds great until you're only selling a few cases a month. We ended up taking a lower margin with one line because the repeat orders made far more difference in the long run.
