Anyone used People per hour?

i use it. had a couple of enquiries but its mainly for freelancers and the people wanting the work done quote the price THEY want rather than the actual cost of doing the work. e.g. a website that would normally cost £600 they put it to a freelancer and say no no no £300 maximum.

Thats the only thing about it. Other than that its quite easy to use and emails you regular updates.

People per hour - is a nightmare if you are looking for work. The person advertising for example will say budget up to £10 per hour, you bid for less then this hourly rate and the advertiser declines saying bid to high. That is because there are many idiots out there offering to work for what would be less then the minimum wage after they have paid the commission to people per hour and their taxes etc.

Yeah, but what the advertisers don't get Alison, is that this is only a price driven purchasing option. There's no quality criteria used when selecting a supplier. A lot of the time, they'll get exactly what they pay for, so don't get sucked into lowering prices just to win these contracts. My 3 year old would design a logo for the price of a bag of Haribos, but would you use it in your business............??

I can see what both Alison and Stuart say, however the fact (or my experience) is that most people who go on there, for Accountancy work, are price driven .... I've lost count of the number of hours I spent bidding for work and never once got a sniff. So in my opinion (and experience), a total waste of time.

Having said that, somebody must be getting the work ... but at those prices, they can keep it! :D

well i know of jobs on the site that are at silly prices. someone wanting a full 25 page interactive website with cms for £300. believe it or not, someone got that job..poor fella.

It seems to be a 'get something for as little as you can' website. Good idea, but in practice it just doesnt work.

I've yet to win a bid..had a few queries and i've been able to supply back up information but still..they can get it at half the price from someone in india so why bother with me.

I think we're agreeing Andrew ;)

If the fellow was from india i gues £300 would be worth more to him. I can understand from your point of view. Most of these design are from open source solutions with existing contributions I am sure they use these and don't spend hours coding. I still think for other services it works fine.

I have tried it, but like others have found the prices being quoted are silly amounts.

As my main service is Data entry (though for e-commerce users) I am competing with Indian companies who are charging pittance for the job :(

I have used this site, and actually got some work through it. However, having completed the work getting paid is another matter. The site retains a deposit from the buyer, however, this will be used to pay their 10% first.

having not had a response from either the buyer or the people per hour admin team I am considering legal action. I will of course need a response from PPH to get the full contact details of the buyer!

Personally I would avoid and I will not be working through them again.

Hi,

I'm trying this out as a free member at the mo. To be honest as somebody already points out in these posts it's a UK version of ELance where the buyer is after getting their stuff done as cheap as possible and post ridiculously low budgets! I've stuck a few bids in to see what happens but hopelessly out bid each time.

There was one yesterday to create 20 pages of HTML and retro fit them into an existing site - the winning bid was £100.00!! Bet his PC used more in electricity in completing the job than he charged!! There was another on there asking for a full ecommerce site - max budget £250?!?!

So, in summary looks like a nice idea but a waste of time to get real work.............

I've used it as a buyer. Whilst it's true that many people bid for peanuts, I've always avoided any supplier who's offering to work for less than the market rate. As far as I'm concerned if I'm advertising a requirement I want the job done well, and I'm not interested in the false economy of hiring someone on the cheap.

odesk.com

Thats another just no room for average person to get a job always gets under-bid by people in India and east asia. Good idea to start with.

Today?

I know it had been mentioned in the past. I suppose if you made it specific to your region, i.e Uk only it might be a better solution in my eyes. Its like how companies out-sourced there tele-centers to india. Cheap in the eyes of the company i guess.

I don't think much of people per hour now. Not only have full time freelancers like myself got to compete with people in India etc now have to compete with those ones already got a full time job and income. Think they should have it specific and have proof that someone is a full time freelancer. I shan't bother using people per hour anymore.

It was always going to head the same way as eLance. I've noticed in the last month that the project budgets are getting less and less as well. Glad I didn't spend any of my hard earned cash on this.....

I use PPH on both levels, as an employer and a professional. Works for me as I have gained a lot of quality clients this way with ongoing and repeat work. It's fantastic... Just don't expect to get a Guru for peanuts though. Make sure you read every profile page you have a serious bid from and check their feedback.

If you would ever need a designer for print or electronic material, please see my profile page by searching for "Wayne Hodkinson" (that's me) on the site.

My website offers a very cost effective alternative way to find quality freelancers and I don't charge commission on any work they do for you.

I have PM d you with further details.

I'm a member on several such sites and never found much from them. When I use them to look for programmers, I get bombarded by template letters from project managers offering a whole team at my disposal.
When I look at interesting-sounding projects, either there are bids at 1/10 what I what bid or I'm not even allowed to contact the client without paying (eLance IIRC).
I have got work through these sites, but not much. Wherever possible I would use them only as somewhere to meet clients and start a proper business relationship.

Yes I have also gained a lot of ongoing business from the clients I have gained through PPH. It seems to work fine for me and my business!

I think PPH seems to be the most respectable and easier of the 'bidding wars sites' to use on both the professional and employer sides of the fence. If there any more sites where the ease of use and respectability are great, please let me know and I will check them out.

I have recently setup a business CameraTrails and used PPH to find specialists to complete different parts of the setup (branding, design, web development and publicity)

I have to say that my experiences are very good, and I have worked with some excellent people through it.

It's important that you make your brief very clear and detailed and that you are prepared to carefully go through the bids and ask for extra information.

Have looked as a potential supplier, but as we are a company (rather than a freelancer working from home) we cannot offer prices low enough.

I I ever went freelance it would be a good way to start getting clients and a portfolio/reputation in whatever area, but long terms you would generally want to avoid competing so heavily on price.

the prices are very low! you can end up doing 3 days work for a tenner. It suits students but for those of us who have phone bills, insurance, petrol and food to buy it's a bit of a no go on many of the projects.

I do bid quite regularly though, i've won a few orders recently so i can't complain. Just warning that you shouldn't expect it to be the holy grail of customer databases.

Decided to have a look at PPH the other day after not looking at it for a while. There seems to be far more projects up there now (especially in my area). I put in my first bid for a job and managed to win it. The process was smooth enough but it's a bit annoying that they take £15 minimum per job. It makes any job less than £100 pretty difficult to make money from for the time it will take to do the job. It's also supposed to take a week for them to transfer the money to your account so no good if you want quick payment. I suppose there's always the chance that any clients you do a job for might come directly to you in the future which would take away a bit of the pain of missing out on £15.

With the payment if you miss think it is a certain time on a Tuesday then they don't process for a week then it takes another week to hit your account. Also don't forget the person you are working for has 30 days to pay people per hour so you don't get paid anything until they have paid people per hour so can take up to 44 days to receive payment. Also they charge the commission on the original bid (even though the actual work might take much less time) then you have to wait for them to process refund on the commission.

Like I said, if you do get any jobs you have to hope that the client comes directly to you in the future. For some jobs it would actually be cheaper to come direct to me as the minimum bid on PPH is £40 wereas the job might only be a half hour/hour max job.

This is a place to connect buyers and sellers, that's all. I used it on the in progress shortrent.co.uk and will use it again in the future.

The responsibility for choosing a good supplier lies with the buyer. Read the bid, speak to the bidder in person, ask for example of work / success stories then make a well formed decision. Generally you can weed out the chaff if you put the effort in.

The market dictates the price, don't hate foreigners for trying to get ahead. Make a decision on previous results. I have had so many people bidding ridiculous amounts to do a simple days work then blaming the way the world is when they dont get it. Move with the cheese, if someone can provide your service more cost effectively than you can, why not outsource your entire operation... surely its better to do that and continue to make a margin rather than go out of business.

I used it once and never again.

I needed some help with a backlog of small website projects and needed an entry level designer/school/college leaver so thought that £7ph was sufficient.

I had about 15 messages of abuse saying if I'm looking for cheap labour then I may as well go to India and if I pay cheap I get cheap.

Was shocked really as I made it really clear it was entry level stuff, updating text and some wanted £20 an hour lol

Id advise to avoid the place.
