Anyone switched from Vidahost yet?

So it looks like my old faithful webhost Vidahost is about to be sucked up by probably the worst hosting company out there GoDaddy.

Has anyone who was with Vidahost or TSOHost yet already switched to another UK Provider? If so who did they go with?

Currently on Vidahost's Cloud Hosting.

Also, I personally use a mixture of OVH and DigitalOcean (DO is awesome!)

Nothing exciting Personal Blog, URL Shortener and that about it. I have about 5 active domains.

I currently only pay £2.99 + VAT but was with Vidahost for their amazing support and Reliability. Sadly support is not what it used to be and GoDaddy taking over is the tipping point for me.

Plenty of UKBF members have been citing issues with VidaHost for some time now - especially the last year or two since they were acquired by HEG, and have switched to smaller providers on UKBF, including us.

I'm surprised you haven't been experiencing really slow performance. When migrating sites from their cloud dashboard it was barely usable because of how unresponsive it is.

As you're on their "cloud" platform, any migration would need to be done manually, but we'd be happy to help, and I imagine other providers that provide hands on and personal service would be able to help too.

I think that's the problem really.

There is too many large hosting companies (most now under the same group) that are taking the pile them high, sell them cheap business model and cutting back dramatically on the support.

Unfortunately for a lot of small businesses, they just look at the costs and not other more important factors when choosing a web host and therefore the likes of Heart, Vidahost, Go Daddy etc. manage to keep turning over enough new sign-ups to make the model profitable.

Vidahost use a proprietary "Cloud Dashboard".

It's pretty limited compared to the likes of cPanel, and does mean migrations have to be performed manually, but that's often an opportunity to clean things up and is easily done.
We've carried out quite a number of migrations from Vidahost recently.

If you want a good UK based host try VTS, @ryedale is a regular poster on here

I have multiple domains hosted with them and so far i'm very happy with them. Never any downtime, great support and at a fair price too.

Their shared cloud platform? I see a few suggestions above for a root access style service (VPS, Cloud Server, Bare Metal).

There is a significant learning curve / increase in responsibilities in running your own server versus just consuming a shared account as I'm sure you know.

Look for a mid-sized company as somewhere safe to move to. Do due diligence on time spent in business, recent accounts (that hopefully show more than a fiver in the bank), VAT registered, ideally not just a reseller or someone buying dedicated servers and marry that up to recent reviews you read and you should be good. Until said company decides to exit too...

I have to agree, the bigger companies are all getting sucked up by the even bigger companies and as Ryedale says, their support levels often drop because of this.

We've moved numerous customers over from people like 1&1, Heart etc. due to their poor and slow support. The one that really grates me is when they reply to customers with something along the lines of 'it's the web site that's the problem, not the hosting' basically a 'it's not my job' type response.

Web sites can be tricky beasts so most people would prefer to pay a little extra knowing that the support team will go the 'extra mile' and just help out customers rather than dismissing their issues with a 'the server's fine' response.

I'm afraid so! Paragon Internet Group (who own TSOHost) were bought out by Host Europe Group over a year ago. Then, last month, GoDaddy acquired Host Europe Group.

So at this stage GoDaddy is the ultimate owner of many of the UK's largest web hosting brands including Vidahost, TSOHost, Heart Internet and 123reg. It could end up similar to the situation which "Endurance International Group" have in the USA where customers leave their current provider for poor service but unknowingly migrate to another brand within the same parent company.

Yup! Hopefully the GoDaddy situation is different but things have been really bad with EIG in the USA. They are very much focused on the financial side of things and as a result, they destroy the reputation of the providers they acquire (there's a lot of them) due to the existing staff mostly being laid off and replaced with the group's existing staff who are overworked. In fact people have had to compile lists of EIG brands to avoid and some providers have to confirm in their Knowledge Base that they aren't part of EIG :rolleyes: Crazy!

I did notice a lot of complaints regarding TSO/Vida's service following the HEG takeover, which was strange given they were previously one of the most well recommended UK providers. I've not seen anything said since the GoDaddy take over but of course it's far too early to tell if any problems (or improvements?!) will trickle down.

If i see the service fall or price increase I'll just promptly change the host.

But I do have lots of websites all over single sites and I have noticed a LOT of acquisitions. It seems that perhaps this is just a way of making money. Create a hosting company, go on webhostingtalk and give away hosting for cheap cheap prices. Build up a subscriber base and then sell the business to a bigger company.

Yes that's very true situation with hosting companies that stay around for 2 to 3 years in hosting business.

The problem (if you would call it a problem?) is the web hosting industry has such a low barrier to entry, anyone can pick up a reseller account and immediately be in business as a web hosting provider. There are so many different levels you could potentially enter the industry at, costing from next to nothing to requiring very large investments.

In addition to the large acquisitions, there are constantly micro acquisitions going on. The large amount of people who start up in the industry means lots of clients needing to be re-homed after 12-24 months.

I've not used them personally but I know a couple of people who do and they've been very positive about them.
