Hi all,
What a great forum! I've been reading around for a few days and there's a lot of very useful stuff! I'm grateful to everyone who's been taking time to share their knowledge, helping other people in business and into business.
Me? I run a web business, which I got into entirely by accident.
Back in the early 2000s, I was running a hobby website, but it was taking up too much of my time. I needed to concentrate on more important stuff - I'd taken one or two bad financial decisions and was trying to improve my modest income.
So I decided to sell the website.
Trying to find out roughly how much it was worth, I searched the web.
I found that one method people were using to value sites was advertising revenue, so I joined Google's recently introduced Adsense programme and placed ads on a few pages. Checking my Adsense account the following day, I found I'd made some money. Interesting!
So I placed ads on most of the site's pages. The next day, there was enough money sitting in my Adsense account to make me take serious notice.
In the space of a couple of days, my priorities shifted completely. The other stuff that had seemed so important took a back seat. The website became a priority. I still have that website, although it's just a fraction of the web work that we do now. I also do some specialist writing for other people's sites.
That's how my business started.
In the last year or two, life on the Web has been much harder than it was once, and definitely more stressful in terms of understanding and trying to maintain search engine traffic from Google.
How about you?
Did you get into business by accident or design?
