Recommendations for UK hosting company

Hi

I'm looking to set up several websites, and would be grateful for some recommendations for UK Hosts.

At the moment I am looking at Heart Internet, who charge £5.95 a month for hosting a wordpress site. They have responded fast and well to my questions, so they seem to be a good hosting company from the little I know about them at the moment. I don't really want to be paying more than £5.95 a month unless I find a host that offers me more.

I will be building 4 websites in total, and don't want any to be sub-domains. All will be wordpress sites.

Your recommendations would be much appreciated - not just on price, but for support, and uptime etc.

I would also like one with a reasonable price for site restore/backup - at the moment I use ipage and they charge about £15 year, whereas I saw it on another site earlier (can't remember which one) for £10 a month That's just in case my site gets hacked or I do something stupid and mess it up (the latter is more probable).

Something else - disk space and bandwidth - how will I know how much disk space and bandwidth my sites will use? They will all be directory-type sites.

If that is the case, I would use Hostgator, Unlimited Bandwidth and space - if you don't use them all the time just to get an understanding of use. If I remember they use a 24 hour backup, my site got hacked and they restored it as long as it's within 24 hours.

I've used Heart and the service is fine though the admin area is a little bit of a muddle. I used to like Namesco but they've become increasingly expensive and I've been quite unimpressed with some of the customer service received from them so I'm interested in this myself.

I will and always do recommend TSOHost.co.uk.

I tried many a hosting company with all sort of fantastic prices and offers, but when it comes to quality of hosting and support then I have found none better than TSO Host.

I contacted them at all hours of the day and night when I have had issues (normally my doing by the way) and they respond within minutes and go out of their way to fix issues that are not even their fault.

I would recommend them 100% and would advise not looking futher.

£4.99 will get you their "pro" hosting package which will allow you up to 6 websites, give you a free domain and 10Gb of disk space.

I'm not affiliated but I'd recomend Vidahost or Falcoda, both are good at what they do, have great support are UK based and low cost to boot.

You may like to look at catalyst2, what I would say about any hosting is be sure to test their support before you join up - fire them a quick email / give them a ring and see how quickly they respond.

They always help out on existing packages with quick, intelligent replies.
They also go the extra mile: last Saturday evening I was setting up a site for a medical condition's sufferers, run by a friend. I emailed Vidahost and they gave me free hosting, immediately, on a Saturday night.

That's interesting. I use ipage and have been happy with them - they respond fairly fast, although sometimes with what is technical gobbledegook for me (!), but I have noticed that loading time for my site and other ipage hosted sites is slow. As I'm setting up some new websites I thought it would be good to have a UK host and keep some money in our country

Another vote for Vidahost. Support emails responded to usually within 15 minutes and they do go the extra mile. (Found out about them from this forum).

Hi Kanzi.

As you're using WordPress (great choice by the way!) my big tip is to go for a web host that specialises in hosting and supporting WordPress.

Lots of hosts offer 1-click installers for WordPress, but often thats where their support training stops.

If you're looking to run multiple WP sites, it's also worth checking out the hosts limits for PHP memory and MYSQL usage. Often hosts will advertise unlimited this and that, but then impose strict usage limits. Some hosts even block you from running the cool multi-site functionality built-in to WP.

I have decided to use a different host for each site. The sites will be set up one by one, and the first host I have chosen, due to the excellent online feedback is TCO (thanks to Darren for that one).

I've saved the rest of the UK hosts as links - and I'll use them in turn as I set up the sites, so I'll be spreading my money around

Thanks, I've saved your details. At the moment I have a couple of sites with ipage and the hosting is paid up until 2014: but when I decided to start these new sites I decided I wanted to put the money in the pockets of small UK based hosts.

There used to be a vast difference between what the small UK hosts charged and what you could get elsewhere from the larger hosting companies: now I think prices are similar, so the main reason for using a non-UK based host has disappeared.

I'm looking forward to the friendlier, more personal service that I know I will get from the hosts recommended on this thread.

One of the things I am slightly confused about (on the same theme) is that if I have subdomains on my main domain, they don't get well ranked in google.

Do you know if that is true or not?

Subdomains can rank good , if you add good unique contains.
