These people make me angry, they know nothing about nothing and think they can charge fees to consult!

A couple of weeks ago a marketing consultant I cannot find the quotation marks as abroad so imagine the term is in them, contacted me to say he would help again in quotations.

Apparently an online expert on how to boost twitter and fb traffic and business, the sum total of his thoughts were, you should change your profile picture, which i happen to like and know looks good.

I thought as an expert I was going to learn stuff!

that is person 1

Person 2 had messaged me today saying he could help me FOR A FEE increase my twitter and Fb following and manage this for me. Great!
So I check him out and see he has 36 followers on twitter in 6 weeks and 3 THAT IS RIGHT 3 LIKES on facebook.

Why so grumpy?
Oh yes, I have 16,000

You're probably right, but the numbers you're looking at don't mean anything. I know lots of social media agencies that just buy likes or followers because people think that is whats important. Also, Steel London are a social media agency who won two top awards at the Digital Impact Awards but they have about 460 followers. Why, because they're gaining followers for the brands who hired them.

In answer to your question, results usually qualify people as experts.

I'm sorry you've had a bad experience. I've noticed alot of bashing of SEO's and Social Media specialists lately, and
I think half of this stems from these rogue offshore wannabes spamming, harassing and actually causing damage to clients that fall for the sales pitches.

We actually had a Indian based "design and development" company email us a few days ago, basically "politely" telling is our website was rubbish, wouldn't attract clients and could they give us a makeover. It's one of the only times I've actually responded and picked up the phone and called them to give them a piece of my mind.

There's huge gaps between contracting someone to:
- increase followers
- improve traffic from social networks to your website
- teach you how to do both the above

Sure, someone can buy followers, which generally doesn't do much good, aside from keep your account from looking unloved or like a ghost-town.

Hiring a ghost poster is very common, as a regular post each day is a great way to raise awareness, build though leadership and drive traffic to the website.

Training someone on social media is a completely different proposition and depends on you having the time and inclination, personality for winning friends/not alienating the masses, etc.

For many SME's, going with the ghost posting (if priced reasonably) is a great way to free up their time so they can focus on running their business. For companies with free time and no free cash, then I reckon training is the way to go.

Agreed, certainly for SMEs, ghost posting can be a real benefit, and you can find support like this of good quality and at a reasonable price. As has also been mentioned though, the results are what matters, not just what they are claiming to do for you. Sadly there's always going to be people claiming to be experts when they aren't, but this occurs in many other industries too. I guess the key thing is to savvy when you are hiring them, and check them out beforehand.

Their only qualification is perhaps they know about fiverr.com :D

If you want to be successful on Twitter, rather then employing an "expert" employ a comedian to make your tweets stand out. Or some chav (if you can find one that can spell) to post on popular subjects that interest the masses.

Exactly - and I'm surprised this advice doesn't come up more often.

If you're a company that unblocks drains, it's going to be a struggle to pick up followers even if you position yourself as the #1 source of relevant, curated content around blocked drains. But if your tweets are funny, you'll pick up followers - some of whom will have a blocked drain at some point, and you'll be the first name that comes to mind.

AKA the Betfair Poker theory :)
