Best place for a new logo

I've decided to rebrand my business starting with the name and logo. In the past I've used one of the sites where you submit details about your business etc then you get a few designers posting designs and you pick from those. I don't have a very big budget at all so can't afford to pay one of the bigger companies to do it but is there a better option than using one of these multi designer sites as I've used in the past. My way of loking at it is that the more designers working on the project then the more varied the designs will be but I guess there will be plus sides to using a specific company to do the design as well.

Advice needed guys.

Have you Googled low cost logos? A lot of them admittedly limit you to the amount of concepts, etc

Good luck :)

I've had a look on google and there do seem to be many companies out there designing logo's. I suppose to simplify my first question... Would it be better to spend £100 on a site which takes lets designers submit their designs, winning one gets the £100 or use a specific company and pay them £100 to design me something?

Post in the tenders forum on here and the graphic designers will be able to give you a quote for a logo, you will get lots of different options from £50 upto £1000's.

Personally I would always say buy from an individual company than a marketplace as they will work from a brief and be able to edit the logo to your requirements where as a marketplace designer will just throw something together quickly.

The more you pay generally means the more time will be spent on the logo, but that will also depend on the company size and the expertise of the designers. Freelancers will charge anywhere from £15 to £50 an hour, an agency will charge from £50 to hundreds per hour.

I think i'd rather have something unique and specific to my company although some of those do look really good

Agreed.

Every business or company is different so logo must be unique and best represent that particular business or company.

Why do you need a new logo? Don't people like the current one? Would it not be better to concentrate on things that make you money rather than soothing that costs you money.

Many of them are really good. :) I am revamping one of my own websites as we speak and I found one yesterday that matched my requirements for about £3. I have no ambitions for global domination with this website so that'll do nicely thank you. ;)

AFAIAC (and this is only a personal opinion) too much importance is put on logos at times. Most people don't even look at them and if they do I very much doubt that their opinion of the company is changed much as a result of what they see (unless it looks really amateurish and cheap).

I would be willing to bet that very few of you (without taking a peek) can remember much detail of the logo for this forum for example? You may just about manage to remember what McDonalds, Starbucks, Ford, CocaCola, BMW and Dell look like but I would suggest that this is more down to familiarity and their dominant positions worldwide.

I am not suggesting that we should all rush out and buy off the peg logos and there are situations where unique logos are definitely a requirement. What I am talking about is small companies who just need something attractive to stick at the top of their letter headings or websites. :)

My 2p.;)

From the amount of logo posts on here I think getting a new logo is a bit like buying a new suit - even though it probably has no real impact on anything it makes you feel better about yourself and your business.

I'd be careful with some of the competition websites, as many of the designers on them use images copy and pasted from google images and logo inspiration websites, and have little care for copyright.

Additionally, many of the more professional designers tend to snub such sites.

The reason for this is that even "successful" designers on sites like 99designs tend to only get 1 win for every 120 submissions (not very profitable in the long run, due to the opportunity cost).

This means that most of the designers worth their salt will go elsewhere to find clients, and what is left are people looking for a quick buck (the get rich quick crowd of graphic designers).

There are some good designers however on such sites (generally ones using it for practice while business is going slow).

Aside from that, some stock image sites have good quality logo designers, but the catch with these is that you pay a fair price for a logo which isn't unique to your company (and customers have a sense of smell for these things).

There is one website (recently renamed brandcrowd after a takeover) which is a logo design marketplace and is like a stock image site - except the prices are higher, and you get a unique license. It may be an attractive option.

Overall though, I think your best option would be to find a designer who can spend time making a logo tailored to your specific needs.

Hope that was helpful! =)

Thanks Anhalo, lots of good advice there.

I'm really torn on which way to go with this but its something I need to decide today. Working with a specific company will probably be better as I want new stationary as well so could probably get them to do it along with the logo. I've done this kind of thing myself and have done it for a few people I know, who even paid me to do it but my skills aren't good enough for what I want.

My business will be targetting very professional people so I have to look as professional as possible when visiting potential clients. If the first thing they see is my marketing material then this has to reflect the quality of service they expect.

If I was a bricklayer or had a local garage etc then the importance of the logo / business card etc wouldn't be so important as it is only the general public who would be targetted. For this business I do see it as essential that first impressions are as good as they can possibly be.

Assuming I'm going to use an individual company can anyone recommend one. I've had contact from a company regarding this but I'd like to have a look at a few others as well or ideally work off recommendations.

I googled logo design in my home town, checked out a few websites and picked a small business whose designs I liked. The person did a great job and at a great price. Maybe try finding someone local to you - or I can give you the details of the person I used.

Get out a do some networking where you'll meet loads of designers. You may not be able to afford many of them but ask them if they know somebody who can help you on your small budget. The design community seem to know each other pretty well and will help if they can. You'll get lots of benefits moving forward by working with a good, local designer. people know that funds are tight for many so just tell them - you won't be the first or last :)

Ok so I've scoured the net and I'm going to go with a uk site to design my logo. Looked at previous work they've done and it looks pretty good, plus they seem to have done work for some well known companies. On top of this they are doing a good deal on logo, card and stationary designs. I was going to use one of the sites like '99 designs' but at least this way i can use the same company to do all my work plus I'll be working with someone based in the same country.

Will update as things progress...

There is a service you can access whereby 10 designers will work on your project so you get 10 design concepts and you contract them all through one person. I used to think this was a good idea but it's never a good idea to avoid dealing directly with your designer.

Best thing to do is to look at some portfolios, view testimonials. Find a style you like, that suits your budget and commit yourself to letting them do a great job for you. They will usually create more than one design in any case.

Hi,

Make sure you get a vector format of your final logo. Any decent design company will provide you with this but there are plenty of designers that don't.

I have already decided on my start up company name and what my company stands for - in my view anyway - so I posted a spec on 'people per hour' and got 54 bids in less than 24 hours, from 40 pound to 250.... I went on gut instinct and example work provider ( which I requested as part of spec), read other users reviews and how the bid back to me was worded...

ultimately selected a designer and I have to say for 150 pound, and very little back and forth..by email. she 'GOT IT' really quickly.

From my posting to completed logo in 12 formats and two color ways in 4 days... personal experience but I was very impressed
