Which Shopping Cart to use?

A company I work with has asked me to set them up with a shopping cart. They're unsure of the quantity of products they'll be offering at the moment but plan on using PayPal for payments.

In terms of volume though, the company's turnover last year was just over £2m so I think this is something they'll really want to make successful and will be pushing money at getting it marketed.

Saying that, I don't feel there's any real need for them to pay for a shopping cart system as there are some good free ones around but having trouble deciding.

Their website is built in Joomla so my initial thought was VirtueMart but I've been looking into Magento Community Edition, however, I have heard conflicting things about it. Is it any good for businesses?

If they did pay for a shopping cart solution, what about Interspire? Anyone used that?

Does Magento Community Edition have limits on how many products you can list?

Thanks in advance.

I always recommend Magento for it's scalability and features. It requires really good hosting. I've got sites running thousands of products and not heard of any limits.

It does have a steep learning curve and is not an out-of-the-box package.

What would you class as 'really good hosting' and kind of hosting have you got it on? We are a web design and hosting company so obviously would be handy to know :)

Yes, we use it daily for our clients sites. We are OpenCart partners and love the script.

Thanks Jamie, that's great to know. I just had a play with the admin demo on the OpenCart site and it does look very nice to use. Just uploading it to our test server now to have a play.

I've bolded the bits I had to read twice ;) PayPal is fine as a backup or secondary processor but for that much turnover they should really be using a merchant account as the rates they will get and service will be so much better...

At present, they don't do any business online, so most of their payments are BACS or Cheques. They are only just moving a small section of their company into an online shop so at present, don't know how successful it will be, so don't want to go out getting a merchant account if it ends up not being worth it (if that makes sense)?

Magento is an excellent choice. It is feature rich and enterprise ready. There are no limits to the number of products you can list.

Agree with openmind re payment though, you will want to set up with a proper payment gateway in addition to paypal.

Have word with Simon from Total Web Solutions (member on here), they have a free Magento module and can advise with regards to getting the correct merchant account etc.

We would be more than happy to help implement a Magento solution for you. Community edition is fine, the Pro and Enterprise editions do have a small number of extra features though the main difference is to do with the SLA.

Thanks, edmondscommerce. I'm still not 100% sure what to go with. I have uploaded both Magento and OpenCart to my test server so I will play around with them both before making a decision.

I'm suprised there's no votes so far for Interspire but then their pricing structure leaves much to be desired :)

i will highly recommend magneto just because of it's friendly features. I m dame sure that it will be friendly to your requirement as we have been using it since 4 years.

Try to execute SSL Certificate which help your shopping cart website to secure online and it will increase your website sales too.

We've set it up on a copule of sites. Its very modern looking and user friendly both for the customer and the admin.

What I will say is the set up can be 'buggy' and their customer support is really quite poor but once its up and running it is a good product.

Jamie & everyone else is right..

OPENCART ftw!

Magento is good, but only really for massive stores..

Although since switching to opencart we've struggled to find stuff it doesnt do!!

heh really?

opencart has its place I will agree but massive stores only for Magento - not at all

the smallest Magento store we have done is single product, single page. It's ideal for it.
