My challenge for 2011 - Please support me!

Jason, do you do anything to update people on the marathons e.g. pictures, videos, where it was, how long it took? I looked on your site but couldn't find nothing (apologies if I've missed it). It says that live feeds will be available Jan 2011?

I know it must be tough but it would give people more confidence to donate!;) How much have you raised so far?

I have been working with Jason to overcome these problems because as I told him he was in danger of winning the race but raising nought by way of fundraising.

The object now then is to carry on with his usual early morning runs each day apart from Friday & Sat where they will be more high profile finishing off the run in the town centre where at least 2 -3 supporters with buckets will be waiting and hopefully some media too.

We now plan around 50 weekends on devoting more to high profile fundraising then. 100 days and I am looking at least £500 a day. I'll be posting full details of how we hope to achieve this later.

In the meantime we will be looking for sponsors - not for cash but by way of the following.

10 T shirts in bright yellow with the MS logo and Jasons name on them.

Printed colour ballons

1000 printed certificates

Any items suitable for a tombola stall.

Anything to fill goody bags for kids.

From the last few posts I think he could also do with someone to update his web site/blog.

More later

That's good.

I would really like to see Jason succeed in this and that's why I and most people come back to this thread/his website looking for updates. That and the fact I wouldn't be able to run one of these in a year let alone 365! So I want to see pictures of him in pain!:D

i think its a great idea, just a shame that say for example it wasnt planned for a start date of 1/1/2012, as 2011 could have been a full year to prepare.

And as eagleeye states I do hope you get everything sorted out shortly!

As really you want twitter followers to be following and commenting each day.
An update of somebody saying, Jason is here today.
Then a short comment from Jason "today was tough guys, keep the support coming".

Good luck, carry on the good work!

Haven't heard any more information from oldeagleeye but have come up with a few more ideas that i would like your views on. I have spoken to several local supermarkets and shopping centre's, both indoor and outdoor, with the view to setting up a stand with a treadmill next to it, with 2 pull up banners, and collection buckets etc with a couple of people collecting, and handing out flyers. All whilst i am running on the treadmill, doing my half marathon for that day.

This would be good, and could interact alot more. Give away MS Society balloons to all children etc. Would be a good focal point for media attention and also get some good pics for my site. I would do this later in the year, in the summer.

Any ideas and opinions welcome to help with this fundraising effort.

Thanks

I don't understand why your not going to a city and running through it. That is what i thought it was all about.

I agree. I think that while a good idea should be left till near the end and will allow you to catch-up or finish even if the weather is bad.

As for as my own plan. Sorry been busy and I thought I had sent Jason a PM anyway. Here are the details. I think the numbers perfectly realistic.

I also think that that as this is a fairly long term project in order to maintain enthusiasm where the helpers are concerned they should be given a small reward for their support. A pint perhaps.

Where I have roped in a few ladies to run say a tombolo stall in the past I have bought a big box or cream cakes. A rare excuse for them to pig-out and they love it.Anyway here the details.

At least 3 T-shirts in MS colours
150 x 5 Helium filled ballon's with the MS Smile on
(Ask local party supplies to let you have a helium cylinder at cost)
100 extra single ballon's to give to kids.
100b Certificates with the MS Logo and your challenge on + Blutac
( These will be signed by you Jason thanking the shopkeeper for their support then stuck in the window. )
Couple of buckets.

The concept behind this fund-raising exercise is that shopkeepers/estate-agents etc are given a high profile credit. In return for say just £10 quid they get a bunch of 5 ballons tied outside their shop and a certificate to display in the window signed by Jason.

Anyone that doesn't join in then will be seen as a bit of a mean old scrouge and it is worth mentioning the local ragsheet will be sending a reporter:D

The logistics. Simple. Start your run and end it in the high street where your supporters will have done the deal with sponsors and tieing up ballons. The crossing the line you go around personally thanking them and signing the certificate

While waiting for you your team can also do a bit of bucket ratling giving away the other ballon's to kids.

Net result. 30 - 50 shopkeepers donations ranging average £10 say £350 quid + £100 quid from bucket. Total £450 less £50 materials £400. 250 marathons to go £100,000.

Your reward. An impressive CV. Job with big charity professional fund manager perhaps @ £50K - £100K a year.

I like this idea, however... would i need a license of some sort to collect in local areas? I love the shopkeeper/estate agents idea! Local rags of all areas would take this up, and although would not include every shop that has done it, it will raise awareness of the concept and then people will see which shops took part, great!

Instead of getting people to collect donations with buckets, which i'm unsure of license etc, could i not just give a bucket of collection box to a couple of the shopkeepers for their counter for that day? May not be as good though...does anyone know about licenses etc, could the charity help me with this?

Your main problem would be that then you would have to run the miles.

Your main problem would be that then you would have to run the miles.

Must say that Lee seems to have a point. I think the major problem with the fund raising attempt is lack of credibility. If you are actually running the miles then you are a very poor fund raiser and businessman. Running the miles is a complete waste of time unless you know how to turn the miles into money. Equally, knowing how to make money from it is a waste of time if we don't believe you are running the miles.

Several people have given some reasonable advice on a few threads about this, but you still seem to be messing about and getting nowhere. If you seriously can do the miles, £100K shouldn't be that hard to do, but you desperately need to find advice from someone with business or charity experience to guide you.

TBH, I don't quite understand why you don't have this all sorted already.

And I also have to say, I have asked 3 times during this thread when you are running in Cardiff...you have not answered!!!?? :|

Sad to say, but there is something not quite right here...

Hi, sorry i did not answer the question, i saw OEE's post and read that straight away, my apologies. I will be running in Cardiff in September, on a saturday, haven't got the date to hand but will post back later.

Legitimately doing this would easily raise £1m

Every newspaper and news programme in the country would give you exposure, Nike/Adidas/Puma JJB SOMEONE would provide equipment, football clubs would send stars to accompany you for a few miles to shake buckets etc etc.

As I say, if you were doing it, it would be superb and would raise a lit of money.

Im starting to lose interest to be honest. Your signature is never kept up to date. Your blog isnt up to date. Your MS fundraising page shows zero. Youve been given tons of ideas and dont seem to have acted on any of them yet you keep coming back looking for more ideas. And here we are three months into the challenge. Oh well.... I hope, for the MS society if nothing else, you succeed, but come on - shouldnt you have your act well and truely together three months into the challenge?

I thought this exactly and that is why i set a huge challenge of £100,000 to raise, however when i contacted the companies you mention they were not that interested, however they said they would be further into the challenge. In regards news outlets, only the local ones have acted so far as it is a local person doing it.

I understand all your comments and all i can do now is up my game enormously and show you that it is legitimate. I hope you see from today that things pick up.

I will not ask for anymore ideas etc, i will just post once monthly on here to update of the progress etc. The main thing now is getting the online presence up to date etc.

Ballcocks.

You are either an idiot or a liar, maybe both.

Legitimately running a half marathon every day would get you into loads of national papers, magazines and news programmes, as well as onto lots of talk shows etc. You would easily smash £100k, £1m is an achievable target.

Your credibility is crushed because you have nothing other than your word to prove it, which is madness for such an endeavour.

It's a shame that this is nonsense as actually achieving this goal would be epic.

JASON.

I really do think that you ought to get back to members to answer these question because you are fast losing credibility we me too for if I recall you started planing this venture over 6 months ago with the support of the MS society. One of the bigger charities who have a wealth on information on fundraising and the rules.

Frankly. It beggers believe then that all this time you still don't know the rules on collection in a tin or bucket. Blimey mate if you can't read you only have to make a cheap local call to the MS fundraising helpline on 0870 241 356.

Now I am going to end this by saying that so far your about a 25% down the line. Time wasted as I think you have pulled about £35 quid in. There hasbeen no verification that you hace even comp[leted any of these runs as it seems that you take them early in the morning and make no attempt whatsoever to gain attention. That seems completely at odds with fundraising to me.

For you to go on then you need a complete change of profile and I might add verications and strict fund accounting measures.

Hi Jason, I think you had a great idea but it's a mamouth task and involves a very big commitment (physically, mentally and from an organisational point of view).

You mentioned a treadmill in a shopping centre and I think this is a good idea if you think big. Why not try and beat the World Record for 7 days running on a treadmill......just over 500 miles! Even if you fail you will have a full week's exposure in the shopping centre and are in the same place for collections and press attention. This is the current holder http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/7004136/Former-soldier-smashes-world-treadmill-record.html

I've been following Jason's posts for six months or so, and what with all his other business ideas and questions I would also hazard a guess, like others, that he's a bit of a dreamer and this whole half marathon idea is just another dream.

Shame as a lot of people have wasted a lot of time giving advice and supporting the project.

Hope I'm wrong, but until Jason comes up with prove - which he will need to collect sponsorship - that he has run even one half marathon this whole thing is a farce.

Could this be DWP uncovered?????

I think this was a challenge that was to big from the start for one person to achieve, especially without any fund raising knowledge.
This could have been done quite easily using a different format.
There is a saying, it's not what you know, it's who you know, and for an event like the ops to happen effectively the more people on board the better.
I would have enlisted the help of other forum members to do the run with me , there are 98,499 Forum members scattered across the UK. 365 half marathons just one member to run one half marathon through their own city, I'm sure there would have been enough interest especially as they could also promote there own business as part of the fundraising run even making it a joint UKBF event for the Charity( Just occurred to me this could be a yearly event for chosen charities ) back on track.
Of course it would take 12months to achieve by doing it the ops way however it could by using the same principle be turned into a relay event
starting of from Scotland ending in London one long relay 24/7 until finish.I don't know how long that would take, I'm guessing a week or so.I'm sure someone will work it out.Well that's my slant on it, i wish the OP well but he's way behind .Jason if you can't do it say so,it was a good idea but like all good ideas, a lot fail at the starting line.:)

Thanks for your posts, even the negative ones. I do take all your points on board, apart from the ones doubting whether i am actually doing it. I may have not done it the best, most efficient way, but i am doing it and i WILL hit that £100,000. I have changed things round a little and will be using my justgiving.com/mschallenge2011 page as my main page which links to twitter and facebook for more details. I am starting to do alot more out and about in the local towns and have secured several venues to run on the treadmill for the half marathon that day, and i think this is where alot of my fundraising will come from. I have also spoken to businesses with large customer databases that have advised me on creative ways to raise money for the challenge.

Please bear with me in this challenge. I AM behind but i intend to change that and turn this challenge into something to be proud of. Feel free to make a donation if you believe in the challenge and the cause, it would greatly help when i get people to the website to see other people actively donating ... only if you believe in the charity etc.

To be honest, you set out the parameters of your challenge then changed them to suit yourself, any credibility you had has diminished by your lack of providing any information regrading any of your runs, have you done them who cares, you only seem to post asking for money .

How have i changed the parameters of my challenge to suit myself? I know it has not gone aswell as planned but i don't understand how i have changed it to suit me?

A quick update, i have managed to secure numerous spots at supermarkets and retail outlets from May onwards to run a half marathon on a treadmill and have people fundraise for me. The first one is at a major outdoor/indoor retail village based in Nottinghamshire/Derbyshire.

I am having a 'stall' near the entrance with the treadmill, with pull up banners, balloons and flyers etc.

Does anyone have any tips/suggestions etc on how to make the most out of this? Could i get a business to sponsor the event, which is saturday and sunday, prime time for shoppers. They could cover the cost of the event such as flyers and banners etc in return for being on the flyers and banners etc, and the media coverage from that day would be good for them, whether i complete the whole challenge for the year or not, they get good publicity for those two days (i will finish the challenge mind).

What do you think? Also any ideas to get the most out of it? Please try and stick to these points and don't stray into 'questionability' over the challenge. Thanks

I cant see too many businesses wanting to sponsor a bloke running 13 miles on a threadmill as a one off to be honest.

I could see businesses wanting to be involved in an awesome physical challenge from beginning to end. They would get publicity all the way through for a year and beyond.

I fear the slap dash, unwitnessed, non independently verified runs youve done to date is going to come back and bite you in the bum when you start making claims of fantastic feats of endurance.

You say you have slots, but have you any businesses on board yet?

Jason, we really need to be reading about you in the papers, seeing you interviewed on tv and hearing you interviewed on radio. High profile stuff. Have you had any interivews in specialist mags.

The fact you keep coming back here asking do people think this that or the other makes me think you still havent got an orchestrated plan to achieve your target. 3 months down and £85 in the pot.

Why are MS society not plugging you all over the place? They need to be.

What started out to be an inspiring post has turned to mush.

Are you sure you are not trying to complete one 1/2 Marathon over 365 days, you would of got more exposure if you did that.

Lloyd Scott comes to mind (Man who ran London Marathon in Diving Suit-5 days to complete, he does something every year) go search for the exposure that man gets for just 1 marathon!!!

My problem is:-

MS Society search box seems to know nothing about this epic challenge.

Why isnt our old friend Norris Mcwhirter or Roy Castle sending messages from the grave to their friends at Guinness.

"This is" would be involved in at least one county...surely?
They did it for this Jason Fisher
http://www.thisisgloucestershire.co...ackle-run/article-2812583-detail/article.html

All I see is pages on the net that you have set up. Nothing from an outside source.

I find it hard to believe at least one tabloid, Nike, Mars, Red Bull, Sky would of done something to get a little PR/advertising out of this.

Ive got to goto bed I have to be up early in the morning to do a bit of running on the spot at my local westfield.:)

Sadly it sounds as though your sales and marketing experience haven't served you well; you should have set up advertising, interviews, advertorials, sponsorships etc during 2010, the MS society shoudl be raving about you by now, we shoudl have seen you on the local news for each town you run in. I hate to say it, but although you have good intentions and may have done the running, you simply won't be able to delivery on your goal of 100,000 unless you get the PR machines working for the rest of the year - 4 items for such a challenge is just not enough exposure.

I know this has not been the best organised challenge but i have been doing the runs, and it has been a great personal achievement but have started getting shark shooting pains in my feet, like electric shock pains.

So is that it :| The way you said ''has been a great personal achievement...'' makes it sound like that's it.

Or are you going to run 7 full length marathons (spaced out obviously) to make up the equivolent mileage, so you can say at the end of the year you ran the equivolent of a minimarathon every day for a year :|

Is that a self diagnosis, or have you seen a GP or specialist like a sports physio???

No, thats not the end. I will carry on, even if i end up missing 20, i will carry on and see how many i can physically do come the end of the year. Yes, i will try and catch them up gradually to make it the equivelant to halfmarathon a day.

I have told someone who suffered with the same my symptoms and it is exactly the same. I am seeing someone Monday but already spoke to them on the phone and said it sounds like that.

Dont be so patronising, he has the best two doctors in the land looking after him

Dr Google
Dr Wiki

They are very good, they are currently treating me for Paranoid schizophrenia with the occasion outbreak of Small-poxs and The Plague

That link was after i researched the term i was told they thought it could be. I didn't just type symptoms in the net and assume thats it. I would never do that, it always leads to 'death'.

Runny nose = death
sore throat = death
bad finger = death
