Haven't had time to look around any forums yet.
Is anyone talking about the google url shortner and whether it can have any possitive or negative effects?

I'm guesing it will since Google want you to use everything they make - and they'll coerce you by adding some 'weight' to them.

Not sure yet. Just heard about it but i guess it must have good results as it is introduced by Google. On the other han you could just use httaccess file to rewite your urls and make them shorter and SEO friendly. I think we will need to see in the meantime what url shortener is really for and how it affects ranking and SEO.

Other people can also see the stats.

I'm wondering if there will be any advantage/dissadvantage of using it instead of nofollow links and also as a way of tracking how many people exit your page via a particular link.

Well you can already do that with analytics but using this might be easier. It depends what you're doing really?

I'm not sure how the privacy issue works tbh but for joe blogs (which 99% of users will be) I doubt anyone will be interested in his stats. For an affiliate or e-commerce site I think I'd prefer to keep it all private?

Once people know how google treats them they might end up being used as links on sites rather than what they are meant for.

If they are just treated the same as nofollow, they may be used for that instead, which leads to the question, would people want them used pointing to their sites?

People have been using shortlinks for a while now - as well as forums, facebook and twitter. None of them are ideal really?
The way I see it is that people may use this as an alternative to what they are using now (bitly or tinyurl)- rather than suddenly adopting a new way of linking.

Its quite good if your logged into your google account as it tells you how many clicks it received with some other info. So useful I suppose to track how well a link on a particular website or twitter for example performs

Could be useful for tracking on some websites.

If there is any way this can be manipulated to create a benefit it will be.
