Adult websites beware

My point is... The guy has not broken any laws.

It was a post about how a local newspaper can take the higher ground above the law and slam a local businessman based on its own misplaced morals.

(BIGGER PICTURE)

Ooops sorry I shall go take me pills now.;)

TBH if someone is good at what they do it should not matter if they design a site for anyone regardless of job. So long as the website contains legal content at the time of design.

I know that I will not put my link on a website (as I normally would) with any porn or risque site.

If, however, as the article seems to say, the gentleman is running his own porn websites as opposed to designing them for clients, I can understand why the council may be a bit miffed.

A few days ago someone on this forum was looking for hired help to do some work on their adult website.
I thought I would bring this piece of gutter journalism that appeared in my local rag to your attention.

http://www.thisishullandeastriding....-business/article-1883453-detail/article.html

Word of warning, make sure you dont do it in the Hull area.

one assumes "porn" and "near my location" were your search terms, or did you "just stumble across the report"

LOL

Actually - It's on the News paper A-Boards outside the shops :P

I personally don't see a problem. Yes, he works with the councils / Beverley's town website.
Yes, he does / has made "adult material" websites...... all above board - Just morally wrong in the Daily Mails eyes.

That don't give them the right to destroy a man's reputation & businesses. It's a disgrace. So what if he has a client base who wants adult content... his job is to make websites - that's what he's doing.

I'd have removed the links from the websites though.... not kept them on there ;)

From a professional point of view I would be interested to know what legal position Mr Smith might have.

Facts of the story appear to be true so technically there is no libel, however is there scope for arguing that the article is an attempt to ruin his reputation and that it should not have been printed based on the fact that it is not in the public interest?

Looking through the reader comments this is clearly a PR disaster for the paper as everyone seems to have turned on their decision to run the piece.

Indeed David,

The HDM (Hull Daily Mail) Apparently have this "boost the local business" operation going on. The idea is to help local business through this "tough time".

Then they go pull a stunt like this.

Fact is, If you look through a lot of the other articles - related or not... most comments disagree with the paper and generally think it should be put to rest!

He runs the Beverley local website.
The HDM are now running a banner add for their own new Beverley local website.

Long live the freedom of the internet.

We are in Hull and the HDM only print what they want to, especially when there are people getting mugged and stabbed out side thier front door (again) and they do not print that.

What a bunch of *******.

I'm sure none of the newspaper's journalists have ever looked at hardcore porn on the internet.

A load of malicious curtain-twitching hypocrisy.

It's not good, but at the same time wise words of caution to designers out there.

If its something you don't want to be associated with either don't sign it or don't do it!

Whenever i've been asked to do work for projects I don't agree with i've always turned my back. It's not a case of picking and choosing work, it's about ethics and whether you believe you're providing real benefits to people. Porn isn't high up on my list of "how to make the world a better place", but hey I suppose someone has to supply the demand!

But Jen, hasn't pron led the intertube world in many ways? Marketing, black hat SEO, fast loading images and image optimization, photo retouching etc etc.
Whenever there is a gap in the market pron rises to the challenge and designers shouldn't be caught with their pants down regarding this remorseless thrust towards virgin territory, web wise, natch.

(On the other hand, sex in films doesn't always make money as shown here:"Bare Breasts Don't Beget Boffo Box Office", so you might not make much money with pron, a sort of solitary pleasure...)

When I read this story first hand in the Hull daily mail I was so angry I set up a facebook group Highlighting the depths that some major media outlets like the are going to in order to crush their rivals.
Im not sure if setting up a FB group was a tad childish? but it was a knee-jerk reaction.
A few days later I contacted the guy who runs the Beverley site to ask if he wanted the group removing. We chatted for a while and I can confirm he is a very decent, genuine bloke who does a great deal of good for his community through his website.
After the Hull daily mail smear campaign he could have very easily thrown in the towel had it not been for the overwhelming support he got from all sections of the community from local public figures, disgusted HDM readers and 1000's of people all over the world on countless forums and message boards. Even the HDM Message board was bombarded with shocked readers comments.
As it happens my FB group actually resulted in a collaboration of sorts when I get back to Hull as we may be teaming up to launch a local motors website.
The HDM wont like that so I will boot the skeletons from the closet now.
In 1989 I was given a good talking too by the local plod in whitby for midnight skinny dipping. It was a very cold April night so an indecent exposure charge was hardly appropriate
