How do I tell which one I need?

Vidahost.com for us.
Unbelievably good service, real people to talk to on the 'phone with good knowledge.
I think they are members of this forum too.
Finally, they are in Somerset like yourself so practically supporting local business!

don't even think about using a shared hosting account - not secure, cheap, nasty

Absolutely. After working in the hosting industry for 5 years I have seen plenty of shared servers that have been hacked.
So, if you value your security, and that of your customers, then a shared hosting solution isn't really a good option IMO.
You could have a hosting company run by a police checked monk or one run by an axe murderer
I think the bit about security is a fair comment to make.
Untill anyone who offers hosting (and all members of staff) are police
checked how can they possible claim to be secure?
No disrespect to any hosts on here, (I use at least 2, possible 3 of you)
but if truth be told I know very little about any of you.
Reseller hosting is a ticking time bomb in my opinion.
"The issue with hosting is the amount of bedroom hosts that are around, they are the ones to watch out for."
Again, that is my whole point.
Anyone can set up a very profesional looking website, take out a reseller
package, and start selling hosting with the end user thinking they are
using a reputable *proper* company.
"I would say our security is top notch, we have passed various PCI Compliance checks plus external security audits without any problems."
Were these compulary?
in my opinion, the sooner anyone who provides any kind of hosting has
to pass checks like this the better.
