Did anyone else see "All Over The Shop", a business retailer programme last night (Tuesday) on BBC2 7:30pm?

I thought it was very entertaining and informative. Lots of common sense business advice for the small shop on the high street, advice which can also be applied to online retailers.

If you missed episode 2, you can catch it on www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer

My favourite quote last night from Geoff Burch, the presenter/business advisor, was:

"Gift shops really bother me. There's hundreds of them. Why does anybody ever open a gift shop, do they really believe there's a shortage of gift shops."

Certainly a market saturation issue which crops up on this site's ecommerce forum from time to time.

I only wish I saw the first episode now, unfortunately it is no longer on iplayer.

I watched the first ten minutes and thought it was dull as dishwater. I also think they hand picked the most parocial businesses where even a modicum of business nous would have made a huge difference. Dont know who the guy is but just wasnt entertaining enough for me.

I think I may have done the branding for one of the shops on this series as part of the show - I thought it was going to be on BBC3 though.

Who is Geoff Burch? Does anyone know?

It's all so obvious from the outside looking in but so difficult to see these things yourself. Wish someone would come to my shop and tell me what to do to improve it.

I can't remember his exact background but he has written one of the few business books which I have actually managed read fully. The title is Go It Alone - The streetwise secrets of Self Employment. I found it really easy to read and quite informative. I think he has written some other ones as well but I haven't read them.

I watched this on Iplayer last night. Had great hopes as one of the shops featured was an antique shop - no surprises there - a guy had sunk £130K of his inheritance into this place with no wages drawn for 3 or 4 years and ends up with a shop full of tat - just about sums that trade up really.... I thought the presenter was quite engaging but did find the whole format very sterile and too cosy. Could have been much better I think, but then they did all have only half an hour to pack it all into!
